“The legend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The location isn't great, the facilities are not good, but the barbeque is so damn good that all the other stuff doesn't matter at all! A legend for a good reason!

“Outstanding Barbecue!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

This is my kind of place! When I go to a place away from home, I try to seek out the unique food for that area and go to its classic establishments. The places who have been serving the locals this food forever. Kansas City is barbecue. There are a couple of standard places, but Arthur Bryant's is the top of the heap for me.

The food is truly delicious. Plenty has been said about that. The craggy old fella who has been serving these delicious meats by hand so long that his hands seem to have evolved into kitchen utensils sure brings a measure of dignity to the art of the Kansas City BBQ that cannot be matched by the cutest little teeny bopper. And the food is delicious. You know it always has been. These aren't posers; these folks are the ones who made it all happen.

“Average food, OUTSTANDING sauces”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

I went there on a Wednesday afternoon at around 3 pm to avoid the crowds. Being a single female traveler, I tried to be vigilant on my way there because this establishment is in a very modest neighborhood.

Now onto the food! I tried their combo sandwich with burnt ends and pulled pork, and their fries. Having tried some good BBQ in North Carolina, I think their pulled pork was too thread-y and soggy. It was so finely chopped that it picked up a lot of sauce with it. The sauce that it was BBQ'ed in was little tangy, nothing too impressive. The burnt ends were fine. Very chunky, quite smoky and chewy, with some detectable smoky sauce. It was better than the pulled pork! The fries were quite terrible, to be honest. They were all soggy and flavorless. I wouldn't be able to eat any were there no BBQ sauce/ketchup!

Now, onto the 3 kinds of sauces on the table - they were the stars of the restaurant! I loved the Sweet and Spicy and Rich and Smoky. The Sweet one was very complex with sweetness and spiciness that go well with anything. For a second, I even thought that if I had to use only one sauce for the rest of my life, the Sweet sauce would be it! The Smokey one was also very nice, again, complex with a smokey kick to it. The Original had a funny mustard-like kick to it that I didn't appreciate.

The staff was friendly. There was a sweet old lady by the register who was in charge for the beverages :)

“Average BBQ.”

Surly employees, rough neighborhood, seedy building. All part of the charm. Good place to take out of towners.

“Loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

If you like a fine dining experience, go elsewhere. But if you want to experience KC BBQ in a setting that feels like it has been locked in time just the way it originated, this place is it. BBQ did not develop as a high-class food, and this place stays true to that history. Nevertheless, it is delicious. The burnt ends are a must--slathered in sauce, but still smokey. The pulled pork is a bit sweeter if that's the way you like your pig. And the walls of the place are covered in photos that remind you of the history of the joint and its iconic neighborhood. A survey of the BBQ landscape is a good way to get to know KC, and this ought to be one of your stops.
