I have to be honest and say I ate here not expecting much. We had received a credit voucher for the restaurant as part of a deal for booking a room at this hotel through TripAdvisor (thanks, TA!). But, I'm typically not impressed by hotel restaurants. So, I figured we'd come down here, have a glass of wine, order a few appetizers to use up our voucher, and then head elsewhere for dinner.
But once we sat down & read the menu and saw some of the food being delivered to patrons around us, we decided to give it a try.
We started the meal with a couple glasses of wine and an order of the flatbread and hummus. The presentation of this dish was wonderful, and the flatbread and hummus were good. The hummus was super garlicky (which I like), but consider yourself warned...you might want some breathmints afterwards!
One of the best parts about this restaurant is that you can order the hearty dishes in two sizes...small or regular. We both ordered small plates and it was more than enough food after having split an appetizer.
I ordered the small plate Grilled Beef Tenderloin and my boyfriend ordered the small plate Braised Short Ribs and both dishes were excellent. My tenderloin was cooked perfectly to order (medium rare, please) and seasoned just right. His short ribs were so tender they nearly fell off the bone.
The decor of this restaurant fits in with the decor of the rest of the hotel. There was something modernly vintage about this place. While the interior was definitely heavier & darker than South Beach, it sort of reminded me of the gathering areas you find on the main level of South Beach hotels. Vintage, upscale but not pretentious. It felt intimate without feeling claustrophobic. It was definitely a great place for couples to be. But I noticed some people at the table next to us doing business (we were there early evening on a weeknight) and it seemed to work well for them. The patrons at the bar appeared to be in town for some sort of conference, and seemed content with the environment, too. I would say any occasion or group of people would be happy here, but probably isn't a great environment for kids as it is formal.
Our service was terrific. Our waitress took the time to chat with us a bit and do what she could to make us comfortable and answer our questions. The timing of the food was terrific and the presentation, quality and taste was excellent. She knew we were headed to a concert, so she was conscious of getting things to us timely but without rushing us completely. Because it is in a hotel, I'm sure the attire ranges greatly, but I would have felt most comfortable in at least business casual if not a little dressier.
All in all, it was wonderful. A month later we are still talking about the food. And love what a great surprise this was, considering we weren't planning to stay beyond appetizers.
