“Best BBQ around”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

We love to eat a Bear's and never miss a chance to do so. The food is wonderful and servings are huge. The pork rinds are so good, they make them fresh when you order. Bear and Cheryl are so friendly you instantly feel at home. Don't miss Bears cakes, he makes a new flavor each month.

“Best BBQ in KC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

We learned about this restaurant from a friend of a friend. It is in a small strip mall so it can be easily missed.

Forget about Jack Stack and Smokin' Guns - this is THE place to eat BBQ in KC. My husband has a competition BBQ team and knows how good BBQ should be made. This place is it. We asked how they made their burnt ends - the quick response was from the point. Good answer. Jack Stack is merely cubed meat - not true burnt ends.

The meat is unsauced, which is the way it should be. There are sauces on the table if you require it.

The sweet potato fries are fabulous and be sure to order the "Bear Hug" which is not currently listed on the menu, but which is simply amazing.

The owners are simply delightful.

“Yum-MY!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

Bear's is a little bitty place in a strip mall behind a Quik Trip so not many people see it. This is unfortunate because a lot of people are missing out on some of the best BBQ in town and some of the nicest people, as well. Bear is a great big guy who greets you when you come in. Margaret is the main (only?) server and once you tell her your name she will never forget it. Now, to the food! Start with the smoked wings. I had them plain because I'm not a fan of hot, but I've been told the hot ones have more flavor than real heat. The first time I went to Bear's I had the ribs. He doesn't use sauce on anything so you get the full flavor of the smoky meat and can add sauce as you desire. He has three kinds: Bear's, which is mild; Raging, which is a flavorful medium and Mankiller, which has a nice slow burn and a lot of flavor. The second time I went I had the burnt ends everyone raves about. Wow!!! Tender, full of flavor and impossible to stop! The sides are good. The baked beans are a nice blend of sweet and hot with small pieces of jalapeno adding heat. The sweet potato fries are crisp and tender. Oh, and Bear also makes dessert. We have had a different one every time we've gone in - he likes to experiment. :) The last one was a very tall lemon cake with pomegranate icing which was a moist and tasty. This place is just plain good overall and can definitely compete with the BBQ big-boys if given a chance.

“Best of the BBQ Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

Did a baseball and BBQ tour when the Twins were in KC. Bear's was the best BBQ we had. We also tried OK. Joes and the Smokehouse BBQ in KC and Smokey D's in Des Moines. Great ribs, brisket and pulled pork. We also tried thier fresh pork rinds - delicious. Came out snapping and cracking. I would add this to your list of must-do stops when looking for BBQ.
