We have lived in Columbia for over 20 years and have heard Madison's advertised forever. I just assumed, although I don't know why, that it was a snazzy, white tablecloth, fine dining establishment. Not. So--our disappointment was not because there was anything actually wrong with the food or the service, it was simply not what we anticipated.
The entrance is confusing & crowded and the cash register line ends in the doorway. We felt somewhat ignored by the staff while waiting to be seated.
Server was flustered and hurried by very nice and found us a table straight away.
Table was under an unflattering light, right next to a doorway, and was very wobbly. One of the busboys found something to stuff under the short leg to right it. :-)
No table cloths at all, ambience is strictly that of a local, utilitarian hang out.
Service was prompt and attentive but not overbearing.
Salads were very good. I appreciated the "mini" size.
Bread appeared to be the from the local grocery--pretty unimaginative. They provided a mix of olive oil, butter, and lot of garlic for dipping.
My husband had the strip steak and it was cooked as requested and very flavorful. Not very big, not exceptionally tender, but then not exceptionally expensive. He would have preferred a baked potato to the standard pasta side.
My linguine with scallops & shrimp was served hot (a plus in my book!) and was certainly adequate. But the sauce was obviously out of a container. Pretty much a open-heat-serve feel to the dish. But not bad.. Just not outstanding.
Probably won't be back, but don't want to discourage others who're looking for a reasonable meal.
