“Great historic significance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Amazing place. Well planned out. Amazing to see how small it actually is. Just off the main street in Richmond. Worth a visit.

“very well presented and preserved”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

Well worth a visit . I actually got the shivers in the Solitary Confinement block and had to go outside. My Husband went in and closed the door. very informative and an insight into how convicts existed in teh time. Lots of information to browse. Even found my grandsons name among the lists of tasmanian Convicts so we will be researching further!

“Worth a look!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Not on the scale of Port Arthur, but interesting none the less. Tucked behind the main street and beside the river, this gaol is well preserved and worth a look!

“Small but interesting Gaol.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

Very well presented gaol. It is the oldest gaol in Australia. It was built with convict labour to house convicts to build the town of Richmond, once the 3rd largest town in Tas. Plenty of information boards to read and stories about the prisoners. The gaol is very well preserved and has a great little gift shop.

“Overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

The day we went to visit was a Fair Day in Richmond so thought the gaol would have been part of the Fair and either a gold coin donation or free but no they still wanted to charge full fares so we didnt venturee further than than the foyer.
