“Jewel in the Jungle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2008

I don't know where "Bandmom" stayed, but as far as location goes it sure doesn't sound like Hacienda de la Costa. It is as incredible as you describe it however it is definitely NOT high over the town of Sayulita, it is 2 miles south of town and, according to my GPS, 80 feet above sea level with a beautiful jungle and panoramic ocean view. I have been traveling all over Mexico for the last four months and stayed at Hacienda de la Costa a few months ago. It is number one on my list of places to visit again. It feels like a second home. Steve and Terri are incredible hosts. The breakfasts are to die for.

I really enjoyed the walk to town especially taking in the awesome scenery ..... I am 60 years old and made the trek almost every day, there weren’t any hills that I found too taxing for my tired bones. It's a great nature walk but if you are in a hurry the cabs are really inexpensive.

I meant to write a review ages ago. Now after reading "Bandmoms" glowing review I had to set the record straight as far as the location for this gem in the jungle. The town of Sayulita has lots to offer in the way of restaurants and wonderful shops with all sorts of Native Art and curios. If you’re seeking lots of party action head to P.V. If you are looking for secluded beaches, great jungle scenery, flocks of parrots to awaken to, lots of sun and a gentle sea breeze, and in general a great laid back vacation, Hacienda de la Costa is it.

Hacienda de la Costa is a little bit of paradise perched far above Sayulita. Our suite was lovely--spacious, comfortable, colorful and filled with local art. We watched spouting whales, soaring frigate birds and chattering parrots from our balcony. Terri suggested that we stop at the supermarket in PV before driving up. We did and cooked our own meals a couple of nights, using the well-stocked communal kitchen, but the food highlight was unquestionably Terri's knock-your-socks-off dinners. (And the drink highlight was former bartender Steve's delicious and potent margaritas.)

The intimate scale of the Hacienda (three suites, two cottages) was perfect for us--plenty of privacy plus the opportunity to get to know a few other like-minded travelers. Its secluded location guarantees tranquility to wind down while soaking up the sun, spectacular vistas and gorgeous grounds.

It's about mile and a half to town--and those are hilly miles. Other reviewers call it a "short walk." Maybe it was because we were rushing to yoga classes at Om Yoga (outside of town) or hoofing it to get back before dark, but this is not a 20-minute stroll. We considered the walk part of our exercise, which it definitely was.

All in all, a gorgeous place to stay--and eat!--with a perfect mix of casual comfort and terrific attention to detail.

Hacienda de la Costa is just two miles outside of Sayulita down a lazy jungle road. Where to start...Terri and Steve have created a place where tension does not exist. Hacienda de la Costa is a quiet and tranquil retreat where the breakfast is amazing, the rooms large and decorated with attention to the utmost detail, the pool inviting, and the views...well, who can complain about watching the whales pass as they migrate south or seeing the sun dip below the horizon at end of every day.

I spent nine days here and Hacienda de la Costa is an excellent place to book as a group or spend on your own. I did both. Sayulita is just a short walk or, if you are adventurous, bike ride away. In addition, both Steve and Terri went out of their way to assist in setting up airport or town transfers, allow us access to the ipod dock so we could lounge to our own music, and take the time to discuss where the various pieces of art decorating the rooms stemmed from. I feel honored to have had the chance to get to know them, the two dogs, Peso and Lucy, and the kitties of course. There is nothing better than being on vacation and feeling at home in your surroundings. The atmosphere at Hacienda de la Costa is nothing short of spectacular.

We had a group of eight friends who were looking to rent a house in the Sayulita area for a week. We used a local website to scout out all of the available rentals. We found Hacienda de la Costa on the website. It wasn't the most expensive or the least, so it worked for everyone's budget. We were also looking for a place outside of the down town area because we had heard that there was a lot of construction going on in town and we wanted peace and quiet. Hacienda de la Costa was within walking distance to town and they were available, so we booked the whole place to ourselves.
When we got there, we were amazed. The website didn't do it justice. It was located off of the beaten path, which made the beauty of the estate more striking. The grounds were gorgeous, the rooms large and private. The attention to detail throughout the entire estate was breathtaking. The owners thought of everything while designing it. It was so much more then we thought we had signed up for. The layout of the establishment allowed for plenty of privacy but it had very inviting common areas. The pool is centrally located and is large enough for everyone to spread out and relax. The highlight of our stay was breakfast every morning. We were expecting coffee and muffins, which there was. But in addition to that there was an amazing gourmet breakfast served following. Our best meals on this vacation were served at the house. It was an added bonus. The owners live on site which adds to the "homey" feel but they gave us plenty of privacy so we never felt like we were being watched. They were very helpful with suggestions on what to do and making arrangements for rides to the airport, setting up a snorkeling trip for us and even restocking our beer supply while they were in town. All at no extra cost. Again, I can't say enough good things.
I have recommended Hacianda de la costa to all of my friends and family. I think it is a hidden gem and I hope to return in the future with my family.

While finding a B&B or Hotel in a foreign country is greatly aided by the internet, it is still a crap shoot. I found a few sites in Sayulita that looked good on paper, but after reading the glowing reviews for Hacienda de la Costa in the Travel Advisor,I knew where I was going to stay.
My wife was looking warily at me on our arrival from the PV airport as the last portion of the road to the Hacienda is bumpy, through stream beds, around fallen trees, and up a short steep sandy portion that the cab drivers took as a personal challenge. But on arrival at the Hacienda it became obvious that the great reviews were true.
It's clean, well thought out, decorated, and maintained. They have Email capability, and VOIP for calling home. There is a great pool area with bar and eating area and in our room on the second floor,we could see the ocean and hear the surf.
The owners,Steve and Teri obviously like what they're doing and
do it very well.
As for the food, after the second day all 6 of the guests ganged up to demand that Teri write a cookbook to sell to the guests.
If you want lots of action and partying, go somewhere else, but if you are looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful setting with the opportunity to go to town for the action, you can't do better than the Hacienda.
I only hope the place doesn't get so busy that there will be no room when I want to return.

The perfect place to celebrate. Thanks Steve and Teri for a home away from home experience. Our group included 5 adults and 2 kids. We were celebrating our daughter's 30th birthday. We couldn't have picked a more beautiful setting. Hacienda de la Costa sits in a secluded jungle. A 30 minute taxi ride from the Puerto Vallarta airport. Steve and Teri can arrange a car to pick you up at the airport. As you turn down the road to the house you realize your not headed to your average hotel destination. Through a creek bed and up a few steep hills then you arrive at an oasis. A beer at the poolside bar and your ready to check out the rooms. WOW!! So clean,so comfortable, so colorful, so spacious. And the views. We were able to view the whales spouting every morning. The garden and pool area are relaxing and beautiful. Breakfast is included in your stay and Terri is a wonderful cook. We weren't able to have dinner there but I heard from other vistors that the steak dinner was the best they have ever had. Teri also prepared a Humming Bird birthday cake for my daughter's birthday. I was very touched by her thoughtfulness. Not to mention the cake was first class. Steve will help you with any thing you need and gives great advice on how to get around and what to see and do. And he had a great fire burning in the fire pit when we got home from the birthday dinner in town. It was a wonderful trip. I highly reccomend to families or groups of friends.

Hacienda de la Costa is a peaceful and beautiful place. The divine meals are unforgetable and Terri and Steve treat you like family. The spectacular view allows you to see over the treetops to the ocean. It is in a remote but very convenient location, allowing a short walk to the beach as well as to town. This luxurious place is more than words can describe. It is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and is highly recommended.
