The nicely appointed room we were given was a stones throw from the water, but unfortunately there is a public road directly outside the door (look both ways before you leave your room). We asked for a different room immediately upon arrival. We were offered a different one at twice the price. We decided to keep the room and be ok with the traffic noise and random people walking by and glancing through the glass doors (the only source of natural light).
The grounds at Villa Amor are very nice and well kept, and the staff was very friendly. We were having a fine time and had grown accustomed to the sounds of the ocean mixed with people talking, and trucks, cars, ATVs, and motorcycles driving by inches from our room.
Then, it happened. Have you ever had a dream that bugs were crawling all over you while you slept? This nightmare became a reality on our second to last night in Mexico. After semi-consciously wiping and scratching, and tossing and turning all night, I turned over my pillow to see hundreds of ants crawling all over it. Lifting the sheets, I look down into a veritable farm with ants of all sizes and colors. Let me just say that I have spent a good part of my life travelling all over the world and have slept many many nights on the ground with nothing other than a dirty sleeping bag for protection. I have never been so covered in ants before, ever. I stayed calm and tried to not alarm my still-sleeping fiancé but there was really no way around that, the ants were worse on her side of the bed. I think the ants were trying to get out of the rain that had been pouring down all night long. I could not figure out where they were going, as we did not have any bedside leftovers laying about or candy wrappers tucked into the bed with us.
I took an ant covered pillow to the guy at the front desk where he told me it was normal to have ants or crabs in the room occasionally. I told him that it was not normal and that something needed to be done. We ended up having to pack our things and move (in the rain) two doors down. Once the room cooled down to a sufficient sleeping temperature we started catching up on the sleep that we had lost the previous night only to be awoken by pounding on the door by a truck driver needing us to move our car so he could get his truck by (did I mention that there is no parking at Villa Amor?).
The staff was pretty much un-apologetic about the whole situation and offered no compensation for our troubles. I even asked to speak with the owner or manager before I wrote this review, but they just looked at me like I was stupid. The funny thing is we were thinking about booking the entire resort next summer to host our wedding! Fat chance!
-also, don't be misled by their website, there is no pool.
Stay away from the rooms that have a well used road two feet from the door. Random people walking b...

Naturally I am shocked and upset to read this review. I agree that ants or any otehr bugs do not belong in any guests bed,,,,I dont consider it normal....and can not imagine who said it was. I will investigate this in the morning at a staff meeting. But for right now I must comment on several other dissatisfactions the writer mentions.

1. Villa Amor is not a budget hotel,,,our villas are splendidly designed and maintained,,,however to accomodate the guest who wants to stay with us but at a very moderate price we do have 2 lower priced rooms,,,on the driveway....with traffic and people walking by. These rooms are quite lovely,,,have beautiful furniture, king size beds, great ocean views, but lack privacy and are sometimes noisy. I can not believe the guest was unaware of these facts when booking....our website and reservations people clearly inform guests of the actualities of these two rooms. They are less than perfect,,,but they are priced accordingly. In high season these rooms rent for much less than half the next higher category room.
2. Pool. I do not know any where on our website or in the many flattering articles written about us that indicates there is a pool for the hotel. Many of our villas have private pools,,,but never is there any indication that there is a pool for the entire hotel. We are all condominiums at Villa amor,,,each villa is privately owned but operated by the same Management company. Many owners are anxious that we construct a pool,,,and it is discussed and will come up for a vote soon,,,but No,,,we do not have a pool. I am confused as to why the writer thought this was any different.
3. None of this excuses the ant problem the writer experienced,,,,,I dont know what went wrong,,,why it went wrong but will try to find out. I feel bad this writer had a less than wonderful experience at Villa Amor....and we wish she would consider permitting us to host her wedding here. Brides most often choose to stay in the Grand Villla...and enjoy its pool! I think it unfortunate for both Villa Amor and the writer that she will not get to enjoy her wedding here as many many couples do.
4. amongst the topics I will review with my staff tomorrow is : does anyone recall who this couple were,,,and why was I not immediately told of the problem. I love when guests are happy,,,but need to know when one is not too.
