“Perfect family get away for all ages.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

What a wonderful holiday we had at Villa Romantique. The house suited our needs perfectly and the location was just right. The children, young and old, had a great time in the pool. The local castles were great too. A great place to celebrate three 40th Birthdays.
The owner couldn't have been more helpful when arranging the booking and providing local information.

“Large, comfortable villa in ideal location to explore Provence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

Along with another couple and our son we spent two weeks at the villa in November. I have to say at the outset that we had an excellent experience arranging our rental with the villa owner, Tony Cremer-Price. He has an extensively detailed web page that describes the villa and includes many somewhat romanticized, but mostly accurate photos. We traveled in late Autumn so the pool obviously was closed and the many flowering plants and shrubs shown in the pictures were dormant. The villa rates are considerably less off season than in high season and the rates are determined by the number of guests, not the usual full price of a rental regardless of the number of occupants. The web page notes the sliding scale fee during different times of the year.

We were with cousins, one of whom is a professional chef and has written cook books and by preparing and eating most dinners at the villa, we found our stay to be quite affordable. The kitchen is pretty well equipped with most things we needed but we did have to borrow a large pot from the caretaker, Natalie, to make our pasta and soup dishes. Our chef cousin was in her element finding wonderful fresh ingredients at the local markets and at the close by, enormous Carre-Four (everything you need) grocery store that sold quality meat, fish, tons of different cheeses and good, cheap wines from from the Cote du Rhone area.

The villa is ideally located to explore the cities and small villages in Provence such as Gordes, Usez, Aix en Provence, Nimes, Avignon and a little town where our favorite wine, Chateauneuf du Pape, is produced. We wandered into other little towns in the area to sightsee, shop and usually lunch in one of the local bistros. The food was always good and we were astonished at the friendliness and warmth with which we were greeted. For better or for worse, American travelers are conspicuous. However we were delighted to be treated so warmly and it felt good to be an American traveling in Europe again. We took many pictures of waiters, people with whom we struck up a conversation in cafes, stores, etc. who seemed genuinely happy to talk with us. Our cousin was often invited into the kitchens of restaurants to get the particulars of items on the menu and email addresses of the local chefs.

Back to the villa; the three bedrooms we used were large with comfortable beds and after a couple of days, we were warm, cozy and at home. It's tricky getting up the winding one-way lane where the villa is located and we had to be careful not to run into somebody coming too fast in the opposite direction. The town of Beaucaire is unremarkable compared to others we visited but there is an interesting castle and good markets to get provisions. Unfortunately, like many small (and large) towns and cities in Europe, they are congested and we spent a lot of time getting in and out of Beaucaire on our way to or back from a day trip. French road signage is different, so even with a lap top gps we occasionally got mixed up. On our last day at the villa we left for Lyon where we spent the night, had dinner at a one star restaurant (Les Ardets) in the old section of town, and headed back to Barcelona, a four hour drive from the villa, where we began and ended our trip.

All in all we had a very nice stay at the villa. In a note to Tony after our return, we mentioned that the place could have been a a bit tidier and warmer upon our arrival but with a little vacuuming and scrubbing in the kitchen we were fine. We were able to watch the US election returns on the cable channels and made use of all of the comfortable rooms downstairs. We left the place in good shape and didn't have to pay a final cleaning fee which in our experience, can be exorbitant. Tony requires a one third deposit to secure the rental and a damage fee which is returned after the stay. He has detailed instructions on everything you need to know about the villa and the area and he was always available on his mobile or by email.
