After discovering this historic farmstead B & B online, my husband and I booked the King suite in the Alpenhorn Gasthaus for an overnight stop on a road trip from Wisconsin to our home in Memphis, TN. Although we arrived earlier than we had anticipated, Adrian welcomed us in, showed us around the buildings and grounds, introduced us to the resident cats (3) and sheep (2), gave us a map of Hermann with helpful suggestions about area attractions, then showed us to our room and made sure that we had everything we could possibly need to relax and enjoy our stay. Cuddly robes, complimentary flip-flops, freshly baked cookies and a selection of beverages in the common room, an assortment of European chocolates in our suite, and soothing music invited us to settle in and make ourselves at home. We visited local wineries and antique shops, had dinner in town, and capped the evening with a dessert wine and Kate's chocolate-covered strawberries in the romantic candlelit stone and brick wine cellar back at the guesthouse. Although we briefly considered taking advantage of the very inviting outdoor hot tub, we elected to retire to our room, where attention had been given to every detail of comfort and cleanliness. We slept quite soundly in the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside and the comfortable king-sized bed. The next morning we strolled around the property and sipped coffee and tea from hand-crafted stoneware mugs before gathering in the dining room with other guests to enjoy one of Kate's memorable gourmet meals. After a leisurely breakfast featuring refreshing smoothies, multi-grain banana pancakes, and herbed egg cups (a sort of individual-sized souffle), we loaded up our vehicle and reluctantly said our goodbyes, consoling ourselves with promises to return soon to this charming hillside retreat. For a relaxing "European-style" getaway with all the comforts of home, the Alpenhorn Gasthaus is an incomparable value, and simply can't be beat.
