“The Best in Historic Downtown Hannibal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

By all means do not confuse this Best Western with the one you see when you are approaching downtown Hannibal. We pulled into the wrong one and found our hearts in our throats. The Best Western Plus On the River is a wonderful place to stay while tracing the footsteps of young Mark Twain.

Although not technically on the river, it is a short walk from the museums, boyhood home, and the homes of the real people Sam Clemens based his stories on about America on the Mississippi.

The staff was superb and gracious with the countryside casual friendliness of small town Missouri. Rooms are clean and quiet and the small centralized pool did not create the noises for us that some have warned about.

Not meant to be a five star, this hotel has very little for the nitpickers to complain about. Visit Hannibal, stay at the Best Western Plus on the River.

The hotel was nice inside, except the pool just off the lobby, with the rooms overlooking was a bit weird. Beds were comfy and the room was clean. The location was good, within walking distance to the river and other attractions. The breakfast was good.

This is a nice place to stay and very convenient to everything. Lots of the places to see are just a short walk from the hotel. The rooms are clean and nicely appointed. The weekend we were there, there seemed to be a lot of families and so children. This made the pool area quite noisy late into the evening.

The breakfast was great, beyond expectations and everything was hot and delicious. There could have been more in the choice of fruit.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the pool area.

The hotel is close to the venues we were interested in. Parking lot is very small....The breakfast was very good. The rooms were clean with wonderful comfortable beds. The staff at the front desk were helpful with answers to questions we had.

This property in the historic district of Hannibal, MO is well places. Rooms are comfortable, the chlorine smell of the indoor pool is a bit over powering but the only real turn off was the spilled food in the breakfast area which the staff member failed to keep cleaned up.

able to walk to the River sites related to Mark Twain, several nice restrauants ins area as well, easy to locate hotel right in center of town. the pool was located in central area. We also liked the breakfast here, they took time to make it special.

We stayed here on a trip east, I wanted to stay in the area for convenience of our drive. The location of the hotel in downtown Hannibal is pretty cool. It is a couple blocks from the Mark Twain attractions in downtown and also a couple blocks from the river.

The hotel itself is unique by today's standards. it is a circular hotel with the pool, public area and elevators in the middle, surrounded by rooms. This makes for a cool experience for families with children, but for adults this might not be ideal. The hotel was clean, it was also updated slightly to keep it looking fresh even though it is an older hotel.

Rooms were updated, large enough and clean. The bathrooms are super small but clean and updated. The TV didn't work well in our room, but it was a flat screen with some HD channels. The beds were super hard and bouncy, but probably newer mattresses... If you like a hard mattress you'll be fine, I don't and it didn't help the sleep quality.

As for sleep, room location in this hotel is super critical, so make sure to ask for a room off the road, on the west side of hotel. Our room was right above the road and my wife and I didn't sleep more than 3 hours that evening. Hard bed, cars driving by at all hours of the evening and early morning. 2 or 3 trains passing close by, blowing horn 6 times in a minute and even one tug boat or large barge blowing his horn around 4am. Is this the hotel's fault, not but you should know it is a part of the package. Bring a fan for ambient noise and it would help.

Breakfast was large selection, unfortunately the eggs and sausage were powdered, if possible the sausage was too, it was bad... The gentlemen running the show was super nice and their is a large selection to choose from, just on the cheaper side of quality, but the guy was a rock star!

Would I recommend it, unfortunately I would not, the sleep experience out weighs anything else for us. But it is a fabulous location.
