The Kirkton Inn in the village of Dalrymple, just ten minutes drive east of Ayr, has just re-opened after a change of ownership. I cannot comment on the B&B accommodation or Self Catering Studios, as our party were at the 100 year old Inn for a meal only.
The Kirkton has a cosy little whisky bar by the front door and a traditional looking bar in the restaurant area. The food was reasonably priced and well presented, and the menu was more varied and imaginative than you might expect of a village pub. Dishes ordered by our party included freshly battered fish and chips with tartar sauce which was excellent, and a superb sticky toffee pudding which just the right size to finish off the meal nicely. One of our party was a little disappointed that their chocolate fudge cake was modest in size, but that was the only negative in what a very good evening.
The pub sits alongside the famous river Doon, a popular salmon fishing beat. Sadly you cannot see the river which is to the rear of the pub; but on the plus side there is plenty of parking to the rear.
Dalrymple is just a few miles off the A77 and easy to find. Watch out for the speed bumps if you drive through the village. I lost count of how many there were, but it was a crazy amount!
Would definitely be happy for a return visit to the Kirkton Inn.
