“A Treat on Route 66”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2011

The Wagon Wheel Motel was our first Route 66 iconic motel on our trip across the US. Yes, the rooms are small as were most hotels rooms back during the heyday of 66. Connie did a great job of refurbishing the rooms to meet the needs of travelers. We liked pulling our car up to our door and being able to use the laundry. It was a great night's sleep before heading for our true destination... the road itself.

The historic Wagon Wheel Motel is a true oasis of serenity where the simplicity of the past blends seamlessly with the modern era. The owner, Connie Echols, has gone to great strides to preserve the illusion the motel is a time capsule while keeping in mind the modern traveler requires modern amenities.

Between KC and St Louis, we took the ride south to take Route 66 across Missouri. The Wagon Wheel worked out to be the best place to stop for the night given time, so we called while on the road. We had to leave a message, but they got back to us pretty quick and we booked a room. It was great. A classic attached "cabin" motel that was nicely updated and modern on the inside, while holding it's classic look on the outside. It was a small room with 2 twin beds and TV, and very clean. Price was great of course, as with most of the old Route 66 places. Cuba was a very cool Route 66 town. We drove around and took in the murals, then went for dinner at a local steak place. We had a good time and a great stay.

If you are looking for a modern motel with all the frills, this is not your place. If you have a sense of adventure and want to truely experience Route 66 in its heyday, this is your place. The motel has been completely renovated. My room was very basic. It had a queen size bed, bathroom with shower stall and toilet. The sink was in the main room. Instead of carpet it had a nice refinished hardwood floor. There are no phones or alarm clocks in the rooms but they are set up for wifi access. Of course if you have a cell phone you are covered. I stayed there one night during the Cuba Lions Club car show. It was just what I needed. No frills. Just a good bed in a clean basic room at an authentic Route 66 Motel. Come ye all you heavy laden Route 66 travelers and the Wagon Wheel will give ye rest. Supposedly the Wheel Well Motel in the Pixar movie "Cars" was based on the Wagon Wheel in Cuba, Missouir.

We made the Wagon Wheel our destination for my husband's birthday and were quite happy with the accommodations. We had Suite 16, with the jacuzzi tub, and I can testify that there IS a big enough water heater to fill it up! Seems that all of the rooms' updates have now been completed. Everything seems very fresh and new - especially the bright white bedding. Bed was very comfortable, and our suite had a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. While updates to the decor were made, effort was taken to preserve the 1935 charms - original wood floors, windows and doors. We were told that no two rooms are alike and found that our friends' room had a completely different layout, color scheme and different amenities but was still cute and inviting. We took full advantage of the motel's other amenities - a barbecue grill, picnic pavilion, and firepit (where marshmallow roasting sticks are kept handy!) and had a great time. We were told it was okay to park the Harleys under the pavilion shelter, but found no need as the weather was dry. We would definitely recommend this place to other Route 66 travellers. Connie, the owner, was very nice and helpful without being obtrusive and her shop in the check-in building has a lot of charm. We also learned from another visitor that prices at the WW were as low as $17/night double occupancy merely 4 or 5 years ago. Current prices are still VERY reasonable for what you get, though!

Room Tip: When booking, make sure to ask exactly which amenities your room includes since no two rooms are ali...

Lovely newly decorated rooms, small but bright and comfortable. Lovely helpful staff who were very warm and welcoming. Perfect place to stay on Route 66 in Cuba.

Room Tip: All rooms seem equally good.

We have stayed here three times, and have enjoyed it each time. Very comfortable, and a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Beautifully restored, and rare to see these days. The owner treats you like family, so it always feels like coming home! Cuba is a nice town, with some great murals, and outstanding places to eat. Although Missouri Hicks BBQ recently burned, you can still have a great breakfast in town--try Willis' Pile-O-Food at the Main Street Cafe, it will keep you full for days!
