“A great lunch. Will go back soon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013

I had my first experience at Pastaria about two weeks ago with two co-workers, and was very impressed. The atmosphere is interesting - not a quiet place, so be aware of that.
While my co-workers had pasta, I opted for the Holmes pizza. It was outstanding. The kale salad that one co-worker had looked great, and he said that it was indeed.

A big thumbs up for Pastaria.

“Pastaria is a slice of Italy plopped into the heart of the Clayton business district”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Just visited Pastaria for lunch. I had been there a few times previously, but it looks like I did not write a review.

Pastaria is located on the ground floor of the Centene Plaza on Forsyth (between Bemiston and Hanley). It is a sister restaurant to Niche, and both restaurants are connected by a small internal walkway. Parking in Clayton can be an experience, so definitely take advantage of the free parking in their lot and get your ticket validated at the host stand. (The Centene parking garage is in the same building but behind the restaurants on the south side of Forsyth. There are convenient elevators and stairs from the visitor parking lots down to the restaurants.)

The menu at Pastaria is pretty basic - soups, starters, salads, pastas, pizza - but it is all good and homemade. I went with the Lunch Special, which included a salad and strozzapreti pasta (their house pasta) with sauce. There are several decisions to make between the three salads offered and the five sauce options to choose from.

For $12.95 (which I still think is expensive for lunch), it was a nice amount of food and good portions. The flavors were all great, but the highlight was the strozzapreti with amatriciana (a red sauce with spicy pork). It was tasty with just a little kick!

If you need a little something sweet to wrap up your meal, let me recommend the homemade gelato. Though I sometimes like a unique flavor, what I prefer are the classics like stracciatella (chocolate chip) or ananas (pineapple). Seems to me that Pastaria gets a little carried away with their unique flavors at the expense of having a good chocolate option, but I have still enjoyed what I have tried. (Maybe they could offer some standard gelato options all of the time and just rotate in some seasonal or experimental flavors...)

In any case, I really like Pastaria and will be sure to go back!

Tips: Go early! We got there at 11:00 am (when it opened) and that was a very good thing. Our meals were at the table and nearly finished before the crowd arrived nearing 12 noon. Service was really good, too, until they started getting busy. Take advantage of the parking in the building and get your ticket validated.

“Killer food, great atmosphere, but don't try to go during busy times”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Amazing pizza, fabulous homemade pasta and gelato, wonderful drinks and great waitstaff. My number one complaint about this place is the fact that it is PACKED every night of the week after 6:30pm and they don't take reservations. If you are willing to wait sometimes 45 minutes to get a table, the food is absolutely well worth the wait!! I recommend trying to go around 5:30pm or so during the week.

Always a great spot for lunch or dinner. My favorites are the pistachio ravioli and kale salad. Parking is free!

“Good pizza and pasta”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Visiting family in St Louis, and they recommended Pastaria. We arrived early and sat at the bar while sipping some wine. Bartender was not overly friendly or helpful with wine selection. He was an exception, as rest of staff were great! Our food was all nicely prepared and very tasty. You must try the kale salad! It is perfect. Pasta was al dente and pizza with house made peperoni was thin and crispy. Brussel sprouts were a perfect side dish. Finished off with salted caramel gelato. Perfect evening.
