“Best free thing to do in Branson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

We stopped here and watched the 12 minute film about how they raise the fish at the hatchery, which was very interesting. We were also given lots of information by the volunteer guide. They have not only fish exhibits, but other nature exhibits. We saw turtles, snakes, brown recluse, tarantula and black widow spiders. They also had other stuffed animals and birds of the area. Outside in the tanks you can see the trout of various stages, and can get food to feed the fish, which is fun. You can also walk down to the river and see people fishing for trout. Very enjoyable and free. Allow about an hour for a full visit.

“Great fun for the entire family!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Our entire family really enjoyed our stop at the fish hatchery. We had planned to make it a quick stop and only stay for an hour or so, but ended up spending the whole afternoon, there. Besides learning about how the hatchery works and feeding the fish, we also enjoyed the nature room inside the facility. There were several hands on things to do and learn from. The best part of the stop was that it was free, except for feeding the fish, which was only .25 cents! When we asked our kids what their favorite things were from our vacation to Branson, they said the fish hatchery was one of them.

“Feed the Fish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

This is a great, inexpensive stop for families with kids of all ages. For .25 cents you can buy a little fish food and walk the many cages of baby fish and watch the fish swarm as you toss some food in. Educational information inside the visitor's center explain the process of raising fish for the local lakes. Completely free unless you want to buy some fish food.

“The most fun you can have for a Quarter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

If you don't get to a fish hatchery very often, the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is a good stop off the beaten path of Branson, but still very close. There are a few attractions slightly away from the downtown areas and this is one of our favorite side visits and we try to visit the fish every few years.

It is operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation and is adjacent to the equally interesting Table Rock Dam. The hatchery is a well staffed, well organized location with a visitor center, hatchery film (20 minutes), and is adjacent to Lake Taneycomo and great picnic or fishing areas.

After the Visitor Center, go out and visit the fish. You will see some of the largest rainbow trout in the world and you can invest a whopping $,25 in one of several vending machines and feed the fish with pellets that will make them thrash for the privleage of meeting you. We like to visit all of the different tanks with the different fish sizes in various stages of development. It is almost as much fun watching the three and four years olds feeding the fish!

It was early evening (not yet sunset) when we were heading back the frontage road for the main highway when we drove up near some deer feeding. We stopped a few minutes and enjoyed watching them as they enjoyed the grass and watched us. It is kind of a nice diversion to get away from the hustle and bustle of the shows and motels in Branson and visit some of the natural side of life on the outskirts of Branson. Nearby, keep in mind the Branson Family Fun Factory (separate review) and the Table Rock Dam.
