“Great spot for lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2014 credit card Amex Card Member Review

Good beer (very important) and a nice menu. It's not 'fine dining' but good value, modern pub-grub.
Internal decor has not been spoiled, and the garden area is extensive and has great views over the countryside.

“Really disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

I have visited The Swallows Nest several times and it was a lovely night we felt it would be nice to sit outside and enjoy a meal. Unfortunately all of the tables that were free outside were covered in plates, glasses and half eaten food. We decided to sit inside and after a wait we asked a member of staff if they'd finished serving. He went off and checked and came back and told us to find a table. The restaurant was busy, and again all the tables hadn't been cleared. The waiting staff were great, but I only saw 2 for the whole of inside and outside. We waited 30 minutes for our lukewarm and overcooked food to arrive. I left mine and asked to see the manager to explain why, after 15 minutes the waitress returned and apololgised and took my meal off the bill. Really not a good experience, not the waiting staffs fault, they were great.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

We have dined at the Swallow's Nest on a number of occasions, but of late have found the experience to be disappointing. On this visit the serving staff were excellent, as always. They were cheerful and efficient. But their efforts were undermined by the kitchen. First there was a gap of almost 30 minutes between our starter and the main course, although, to their credit, the serving staff did apologise profusely - we suspect that they were as frustrated as we were.
Then when the main courses arrived it was evident that the kitchen had been overwhelmed. The fish pie was an interesting exercise in "hunt the fish". Two small pieces of salmon and one prawn did not match the description, especially as they had been hidden amongst a morass of boiled new potatoes. The dish was accompanied by a glutinous mass of boiled cabbage leaves and two small carrots that only had a passing a acquaintance with boiling water or a microwave. We did not complain because the "fish pie" had been trumped by the steak & chips. In their defence the chips were very good, but that was in sharp contrast to the steak which was tough & grisly. In fact it was almost impossible to cut with the steak knife that accompanied it. Without question it was returned to the kitchen and a battered portion of fish was requested as a replacement.
The fish, whilst reasonably appetising, was shared between us to make up for the inadequacies of the previous dishes.
A desert and coffee? No. Enough is enough and we did not feel that spending more would improve the situation. We drove home and enjoyed a fruit desert and a coffee there.
Our previous visit was disappointing which could have been a temporary "blip" but our experience on this occasion makes us think that The Swallow's Nest is on a downward spiral and they need to improve their performance in the kitchen to match the hard work of the serving staff.
Would we go back? What do you think? Someone would have to work very hard to convince us that matters have improved.

“Not great.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014 via mobile

I ate here the other day with a friend and left disappointed. The pub itself is a lovely looking place but the service really let's it down. Upon entering the pub, you're supposed to wait to be seated. We waited about 3-4 MIND and no one came near us. I had to go looking for someone to ask. We chose to sit outside and again no one came near us to gave us menus - again I had to go looking to find someone to ask. It wasn't even as though the pub was busy!as we were sitting meals were bring brought out but none of the waitreses knew what table the food was supposed to be going to - they had to go to each table in turn.
We waited about 30-40 mind before I actually asked where our food was and they brought it out.

The food was mediocre - will not go again!

“Good value pub food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014 via mobile

Nice ambience, good food. Great value for money pub food in a pretty country setting. The manager Heather waits on table sometimes because she enjoys it but what a great way to see how your restaurant is working. It is my favourite pub meal. Pity it is not close to me.
