“A very fine fine dining pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We arrived on a quiet Monday night to a very friendly welcome at the bar and went on to enjoy the best evening meal of our week long tour of Devon. A true fine dining menu and the food matched it ,for once - beautifully presented and all dished up with friendly banter from the staff.

The bar dog is a joy, so well behaved and friendly too.

“Simply excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

I've eaten here several times recently for both business and pleasure, each time the meal has been absolutely fantastic. The steak was probably one of the best steaks that I've had whilst dining out and I've had a lot of very good steaks.

An absolute gem of a fine dining pub, if you're on holiday in the area make time to dine at this treasure of the English Riviera.

“Just average !!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

We arrived for our pre booked table and arrived to chaos, it seemed as if everyone in the village had descended to the pub at the same time !!! We got ushered to the bar which was swamped by customers and only two people serving, after waiting ten minutes for a drink, we got showen upstairs where four tables are situated. The menu was ok, but they have quite a big specials board. The starters came quite quick but we had to wait a long time for the mains, the side dish of vegetables was dry and the potatoes did not fair much better, my wife's steak was also very tuff and fatty. When we went to pay at the bar several customers were complaining because of the bills being incorrect. I would not rush to go back.

“Expectation not realised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Have visited before and always well satisfied but recent lunch-time visit was a tad disappointing. Few customers around, dim lighting, no fires and pretty dreary surrounds and atmosphere. Some walkers with coffee and few diners but service pretty slow considering low numbers and not welcoming. Dishes on menu run of the mill and sandwiches etc. Settled on beer and sandwiches; quite uninviting when served and on soggy bread with juices soaked through. Beer not in top condition, probably not enough call and overall the premises not doing justice to ratings. Sure that main meals must be better but country pubs should provide a range to suit all requirements. Other local competitors provide far better fare.
