Our large culinary group dined last night at Mint with a pre-arranged menu. Everyone took the time to dress in cocktail attire and meet with an expectation of well-prepared food as we have had at other venues around the Jackson area. As each course progressed, it became obvious that they would all be equally poor. After plates of crostini were passed, we were seated and served a "BBQ Shrimp on Parmesan Grit Cake" which were two overcooked shrimp on a very lackluster and chokingly dry, undercooked cake. Any home cook could have easily prepared this dish with great success, and that's what made it all the more pathetic. Next course was a "Duck Confit Chile Relleno." Deconstructed, of course, which made it a spoonful of filling on a slab of mushy green chile. Next was a "Porchetta with Beets and a Pecan-Crusted Goat Cheese." Their "porchetta" tasted nothing like porchetta should, and it was served piled on a bunch of spinach which was supposed to have had some vinaigrette; very unappealing and ill-prepared. The very worst course was the next, "Boullabaisse with Truffled Asparagus Slaw." The chef proudly announced that he was able to get monkfish that day for his boullabaise. It would not have mattered what fish it contained because it was cooked to the point where the fish turned to mush in a thick tomatoey slop that in no way resembled a delicate boullabaise. Raw asparagus served as a garnish. Go figure. Next was a "Beef Tenderloin with a Blue Cheese Pot (Potato) Pave." This was served on a very small glass salad plate as were most of the other dishes. The beef had a nice smoked flavor but was so overcooked and such a poor cut that it was on par with all the other courses leading up to it: a big disappointment. Last was a chocolate cake which any home cook could have made. This was a four-hour dinner served with some nice wines, but this restaurant took complete advantage to serve us the most ill-prepared and low quality food for the price we paid. The service was haphazard: a few courses followed others immediately, but most had inexplicably long waits.
