“This was a perfect experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Last November (2012) I decided I wanted to plan a special trip for my wife when she went on Spring Break in 2013. She works really hard as a professor of photography and art appreciation. After much research, I chose Front Beach Cottages in Ocean Springs, MS. Sometimes you get really lucky when making a decision on a new place to go, and this one was hit out of the park.

Front Beach Cottages is located on a very quiet street in the heart of Ocean Springs, MS. The beach is one and a half blocks away, the Walter Anderson museum and gallery two blocks, the downtown area four blocks, and Shearwater Pottery about six blocks or so. It's very walkable and bike friendly. The Cottages has a number of single speed beach cruisers available to use (first come first serve) but if you want to have some really nice rides you should bring along a nice comfort bike (as we did). Ocean Springs isn't a challenging ride, but it's also not flat, and there's a wonderful bike trail that starts at the bridge over the bay and winds through Ocean Springs for about 13 miles. There are both high end restaurants and bar food galore, and plenty of little shops and many, many parks.

Front Beach Cottages is owned and operated by Jason and Cathy, and they are wonderful friendly people. If you need something you just ask, but they mostly leave you alone to enjoy your experience. You also get the pleasure of their wonderful cat, Nola, and their dog who is very friendly, small, and unfortunately I can't remember his name.

There are four units in the cottages. Key West, Nola, Bellande, and Lagniappe. Nola and Lagniappe are in the same building, the other two are stand alone. I selected Nola for our stay after much good advice from Cathy.

Nola is a studio of about 1000 square feet. As you enter the front door, the queen size bed is to your immediate left, then the full kitchen, two person dining area and seating area with a love seat and single chair, then an enormous bathroom with a tub easily accommodating two people, as well as a large, separate shower.

Just a word here about little things that make a big difference. The fixtures in the kitchen and bath are fabulous. No cheap Home Depot stuff here, Jason and Cathy went all out for quality and style. The decorations and appointments to the unit are absolutely beautiful, and again, nothing that even hints at cheap.

There is also a nice deck on the back of Nola, with a hammock, outdoor shower for washing off the sand from the beach, and a small but perfectly functional grill for use with "real" charcoal.

The flat screen TV mounted for watching in bed (can also easily be watched from the lounging/seating area) has the full compliment of cable channels, and wifi is there in Nola, albeit just a little weak on signal strength, though still functional. If you're worried about TV and wifi access, you should be staying somewhere else, because the beauty and access around Front Beach Cottages demands you should be outdoors experiencing the beauty and pleasures of Ocean Springs.

With the exception of Bellande cottage, the cottages are intended for a couple only. Bellande has a couple of extra bunk beds, an extra TV and is the largest of the units if you have little ones or are maybe travelling with friends. Lagniappe is the smallest, but still perfectly functional for a couple and Key West has plenty of room for two to enjoy. There's no doubt at all that Nola was the best of the four for us.

Now you're thinking nothing could be this perfect. OK, here's the one downside to Nola/Lagniappe. Because they share a common wall, you can hear the people in the other room. Not hear like you can follow their conversation, but hear like you know they're there. Do not be dissuaded from either on this one very small negative. Front Beach Cottages is not a destination for college kids on spring break, so you're going to have adults sharing your space, and having had Lagniappe occupied the whole time we were in Nola, I would not hesitate to take the Nola cottage again.

The photographs on the Front Beach Cottages web site don't even come close to how clean and nicely appointed these cottages are. This is an amazing value for getting away and relaxing. We plan on doing this again, and again. The guests in the Bellande were going to be there for three months. I'd love to do three months at Front Beach Cottages.

Room Tip: Nola is the best followed by Key West, then Bellande if you need the extra space. Lagniappe would b...

We stayed 5 nights in the Bellande Cottage, and we loved it. It was very clean and well-appointed. The living room/dining room area was spacious and very comfortable. The kitchen area was also great--loved the gas stove and full sized refrigerator. The main bedroom (with an excellent bed) was huge with a full closet, small sitting area, and its own TV! We were only 2 people, but I can see how a family would be very comfortable. (The second bedroom is smaller and right off the kitchen.) The deck was private and very convenient. The location couldn't be better--close to the beach and downtown and a 500 year old live oak tree and . . . .But we've stayed many places where the accommodations were good to great (these were definitely great), and what turns out to be almost as important is that the people running the place are accessible without being pushy--Cathy and Jason were perfect. We felt very, very well-taken care of without any hovering at all. Can't wait to go back. (I could also rave about Ocean Springs, but that is a different post!)

NOLA cottage has a brand-new remodel with full-size fridge, dishwasher, small stove top and microwave. Very comfortable cottage with lots of cutsy decorations, sitting area, and back patio. Patio was nice when we had friends drop by, didn't have to sit on the bed. We didn't use them, but bikes, kayaks, and bar-b-que grill were available. Short walk to beach, which connects to a really nice bike/walkway over the bay, rumor has it that it continues for the entire 26 mile man-made beach. Also walking distance from downtown Ocean Springs with coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping. Friendly folks! Enjoy!

Very comfortable and thoughtfully appointed
Easy walk to the beach and short bike ride to the Washington st shops.
Best of all was the warm hospitality of Jason and Cathy around a Friday nite bonfire with other guests.

1st time to visit the gulf, perfect location as 'home' to see the area's laid-back spots. Quaint town, friendly atmosphere, inviting hosts. The Key West Cabana was perfect for our needs...well thought out layout and designed beautifully. But we spent most of our time on the side deck...when not at the beach nearby! Thanks Cathy & Jason (Monte, too!)

Room Tip: The Cabana is small; for couples, perfect. There are 2 other properties which the owners have/are r...

My 9-year old daughter and I spent our first mother-daughter vacation here this summer. One of the best weeks we've ever had! The Key West Cottage is small but functional and comfortable and just perfect for two. The outdoor shower is just plain awesome and such a clever use of space! Loved the decor too--Key West all the way. The innkeepers, Cathy and Jason, are so very nice, thoughtful and helpful. Not only did they leave me a really good bottle of wine but also provided our dog with a souvenir water dish and some tasty treats. The cottage is only two short blocks from the beach and they have a nice assortment of beach stuff you can borrow--umbrellas, chairs, coolers, sand toys. Being able to borrow these items really helped with our packing and allowed us to really enjoy the beach! I can't thank Cathy enough for including my daughter in a movie outing with her girls our last night there. Gave me some much appreciated "Me" time and us a break from each other! I thoroughly recommend taking a mother-daughter vacation and this is the perfect place to do it. We'll be back!!

I am not one to write a lot of reviews, but our family recently stayed in the Bellande Cottage and had the most relaxing weekend. We most enjoyed how short of a walk it was to the beach and all the historical shops in Ocean Springs. This was our first visit here and look forward to returning next year. Ohh, I almost forgot the best part!! The local markets offer fresh seafood that we could prepare in our cottage and enjoy on the deck! This saved our family money compared to eating out every night! Thank you Cathy & Jason for a wonderful weekend and tell your girls our daughter Molly and son Patrick said hi! :-)
