“Wonderful,,,”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014 via mobile

While traveling through Meridian MS, went here based on TA reviews. We were not steered wrong. The building is a beautiful old one complete with nostalgia staircase and balcony. The food was great. Mushroom Swiss burger with fried green tomatoes and their version of the BlT with applewood smoked bacon and fried green tomatoes were delicious. Dinner finished off with praline bread pudding and the black bottom pie....mmmmmm

“Handicap "accessible" eatery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

This restaurant is technically handicap accessible because they can seat you downstairs without going up stairs, or use an elevator to go upstairs. On the other hand, the first floor was slippery, the tables are pretty close together (making it hard to maneuver a walker), and the restrooms are upstairs. The staff is friendly and tries to help. We went for dinner on a run to Texas, Meridien is halfway on the trip and the restaurant is near the highway. The parking is on the street and there are no specific handicap spaces in front of the restaurant. The walk is a bit tricky and can be difficult with a person using a walker.
The food is very good and tends towards classic southern cooking. The fried green tomatoes are great - firm inside, crispy on the outside. I think I would ask for the 1870 sauce to be served on the side. I found myself eating the tomatoes fairly quickly so that the sauce did not soften the crust. Hubby had the grilled chop with portobello, He is a big eater, but could not finish the horseradish mashed potatoes, the portion was large. My mother had gumbo with an order or cheese grits. The grits had cheddar. Since the grits get great reviews, I have to conclude that I just don't like cheese grits.
The peanut butter in the crock with crackers was an unusual twist to the "dinner rolls".
The three of us shared a dessert

“Nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

Worth a stop. Stopped on my way from new Orleans to Birmingham. It was better than some of the places I ate in New Orleans. Not bad for a place in the middle of Mississippi

“Great food, good atmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

The crab cakes were great - mainly crab, minimal breading. Redfish and trout were very good, also. The black bottom pie and pecan pie for dessert were a perfect finish.
