“All That They Claim...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2011

Beautifully restored historic hotel, with all appropriate bells & whistles. Friendly, attentive staff. Spacious, comfortable rooms. Minor Negatives: Breakfast is overpriced, eggs are powdery. No bell hops outside to assist w/ luggage. Indoor pool area smells heavily of chlorine.

Great service, location, beautiful lobby, delicious buffet breakfast. It was no ordinary hotel . There is a history behind the place and it is absolutely opulent . Well it is not the Ritz but at $109 with a -AAA discount we couldn't be more please. Ate at upscale restaurant the Parlor Market,, only a block away which they recommended. First class.

Very convenient location to stop while traveling on the Natchez trace or down to new Orleans. We almost didn't book a room after reading the reviews about the location. I'm glad we didn't listen! The location is fine, it's downtown and the area is on it's way back. Not once did we feel less than safe. We had coffee outside in the morning, took a walk and spent time outside in the evening talking to the manager. The rooms are brand new and larger than a usual garden in. Lobby is spectacular. Breakfast crummy, but we've had worse. Next time we will find a local spot to eat. If you like your hotels with some atmosphere, go you won't be disappointed!

Dear Indyjack1,

Thank you for sharing your experience....and for your enthusiasm about the resurgence of Downtown Jackson. We very much enjoy sharing our historical significance with our guests. Awe and excitement abounds! And we'll keep tweaking the breakfast experience until we get it right.

Kind regards,

We really liked the hotel, especially the lobby and bar area. Rooms were nice and in good shape. Neighborhood has 3 restaurants and a few bars within walking distance. Everyone has their own comfort level, I guess, but I think some of the other safety concerns that have been expressed seem a bit overblown. If you need to do things in downtown Jackson, this is the place to stay.

The hotel was immaculate. It was beautiful inside and out. The hotel staff was genuinely courteous and helpful. Finding the parking was a bit of a hassle but other than everything was great. The rooms were very clean, and modernized. Flat screen TV's were in every room. Refrigerators and microwaves were in the rooms as well. We will definitely stay here again.

Couldn't be in a worse part of town. Forced to valet park because no parking is available. 14.00 a day to valet or self park. If you have a disability and have a placard or disabled plates don't expect parking to be available. People without disabilities park there. The inside of the hotel is beautiful and the rooms are very nice, but at this point I would rather stay at a super 8. Paid for 6 nights but leaving early because it is so bad.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for sharing your comments with us. Indeed we appreciate your ability to bring this issue to our attention and have subsequently alerted all valet and security officers to increase their awareness on the subject of permit parking. I regret that we failed to better inspect these parking areas and further regret the poor judgment exercised by some hotel patrons who self parked in these clearly marked areas. We value your feedback greatly and have used this incident to further educate our team on the requirements to satisfy this law.

Kind regards,
Marlene Macaluso

Location - The hotel is located in the southwest corner of Jackson's downtown area. A few of the nearby buildings, and part of this one, have been renovated into urban condos. It's about 3 blocks or so from the governor's mansion, and another 2 blocks to the state house. Mostly, it's surrounded by government and bank buildings. Not much going on, especially on the weekends with the office buildings closed down.

The property - Formerly the King Edward Hotel, it's a Jackson landmark. It was recently renovated and it shows. The lobby is a showcase of polished marble. A decent bar area is located streetside.

Reception- Service was prompt and friendly. Nothing to complain about here.

Parking – Valet is available for $19/night or you can do street parking if you can find an open spot. The meters are not checked on the weekends.

Room - About the size of the typical Hampton Inn, but a little more tastefully decorated. A coffe maker, mini fridge, iron and board are al in the room. No mini-bar. Free WiFi and an ethernet cable are on hand. The beds are the Hilton version of the sleep-number beds. You can adjust the firmness. I'm personally not a fan of them as I can never seem to get them quite right, but I slept about as well as I do on any other chain hotel bed.

Bathroom – Clean and well appointed fixturing. A glassed in shower instead of the hotel standard tub with clingy shower curtain was a welcome sight.

Food - The breakfast is the standard Hilton Garden Inn buffet/cook to order.
The fruit looked like it had been cut about 4 days earlier and the yogurt parfait was downright nasty as were the eggs on the line. The bacon was good and the made-to-order omelet was delicious. In other words, go for the stuff you know was just cooked. Otherwise, there's a local diner 1 block away.

Value - It's price is fair for what you get. I purchased the "business package" which included parking and breakfast for 2. It was only $20 more than the standard rate, so minus parking, breakfast was $0.50 each.

Conclusion – I liked the hotel and might stay again if I needed to go through Jackson. But I'd probably stay in the Ridgeland area to have more access to restaurants and shopping.
