“Small, Sleepy Zoo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

We went to the zoo on a Tuesday, not many others were in the facility which was great for us.
The entrance gate workers seemed more interested in engaging in their personal conversation than talking to incoming patrons. The facility its self was extremely small... this may be because I lived in Texas for many years and visited larger zoos like the Dallas, TX zoo. The animal house that is to the left upon entrance was lacking however our little one enjoyed the prairie dogs and the ground bubbles to view them; however, the entrances and space for the ground bubbles was extremely too small for an small adult to go in with a child. The a/c'ed areas with water displays were wonderful, as well as the outside water sprintzers. A zoo worker walking the grounds told us a out the splash pad, which our toddler loved...luckily we had our luggage w extra clothes in our vehicle so he could change. Loved this part of the zoo. Parking... was soooo close to entrance... I was amazed, again bc in Dallas it seemed you had to a mile from parking to enter facility.

“Help the animals”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013 via mobile

This is the first time I have been to this zoo in 6 years. I am sickened by the animals habitat and conditions. I was expecting major improvements since my last visit but however that was not my experience. I left there today feeling sad and disappointed. The areas that most of the animals were in were unkept and overgrown. It appeared that some of the animals did not have any water. If they they did have water it was green and murky. The otter display was disturbing because their play water had toads in it. He also seemed to be alone but not sure. Regardless he looked sad. The glass was soooo nasty and slimey it was gross Some of the primate areas had worn out conditions. One of the black bears looked sickly. Where were the alligators? Where were the lions ? Where were elephants? They should show the animals more compassion , more respect. The only way to do this would be to relocate it to a better area. Lets get real. Who wants to drive through west Jackson to get to the zoo. It's very disturbing and Very unsafe. If they can't relocate, please close this zoo down. I will never come back.

At the Jackson Zoo, we truly are committed to providing the best care possible for our animals. In the past seven years, we have had many new/renovated areas and exhibits including Tigers, Splash Pad, Gertrude C. Ford Education Center, Orangutan, and Wilderness Mississippi, and are in the process of renovating our Amur leopard, fishing cat and gibbon exhibits.

All of our animals have clean water available at all times, though it’s location may not be immediately obvious to the viewing public. In the summer also, many animals shed their winter coats and have access to night houses, in an effort to keep them comfortable. Our alligators are located in the MS area, near the castle. Their exhibit features simulates their natural environment and you can often see them resting in the reeds.

“up close & enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

A little hard to find; but worth it when you do. Not the best parking. The zoo itself is afordable and the way it is laid out makes it easy to see everything and they have a lot. The animals were displayed in a manor that we could see them. They were not hiding in their lairs. The tigers really put on a show.

“Improving all the time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013 via mobile

If you get the membership it is a great deal. We live about an hour and a half away and got the family membership and come out as much as possible. The kids LOVE the splash pad and there are so many babies in the zoo right now to see. If you feel the zoo is run down then do something to help. We need the zoo here because there is not much else to take the kids to that doesn't cost a lot. They are making improvements all the time. You can't expect them to have the funds to do a complete Reno at once. I say keep up the good work. :)

“Nice Little Zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

After seeing all of the negative comments, we were very happy to see such a nice zoo. We have been to many other zoos & have seen much worse. They have made improvements and they have many more scheduled. We especially liked the prairie dogs and Billy the African gray parrot. There is also a splash park for the kids. It is clean and a good value with free parking. It is worth visiting.
