“'Operating illegally'”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

My girlfriend decided it was time to do another safari, so she searched tripadvisor (as one would do) to find a suitable operator. Having stumbled on Muthaiga Black Leopard Safari Camp and reading the excellent reviews she decided to book a 3 day trip. Unfortunately, something came up and we have had to cancel the trip. When asking for our deposit we were told no refunds and that the money would be kept for a later date. After explaining we needed the deposit back and noting that all correspondence between MBLSC and us in no way mentions anything about not refunding deposits in the event of a cancellation, MBLSC refuse to pick up our calls or respond to our emails.

With the prospect of not having our money returned to us we approach the Kenya Tourist Board to ask for guidance. According to the Tourist Board, MBLSC are "operating illegally", as the company and currently under investigation by the authorities. All this is fine but we are still out of pocket. I guess a review on tripadvisor isn't always a seal of approval.

Beware folks....

it was not my first safari at the Mara but this time , travelling with family four in total , I pointed the top and joined the Muthaiga Black Leopard .
It was excellent every promise was respected .

A short flight of about 40 minutes from Wilson Nairobi on a four seats plane took us in the midle of the Mara , during the flight you can start enjoing your holiday , the sightseen the colors fill your eyes .
We landed at Kekorock Air Strip and our car with personal driver and personal trucker , part of the Muthaiga ospitality , was there waiting for us . The Safari can start .
Both of them gave us a warm welcome and asked us if we want to go directly to the Camp or take it easy and spend some time in the Reserve loking for animal .
Obviously the second was our choice .

Later in the afternoon we arrived at the Muthaiga and <Mama Betty> was ther waiting for us , with a very gentle welcome we received a drink and from that time to the end of our stay we felt Home , they know what you need and they are ready for it .
The Camp is fashinating every tend is perfectly positioned and furnished as a 5 Stars deserve , all services are perfectly running .

We spent two more days and every morning at 6.30am our car was ready for us , with cold drinks available for the day and lunch box ready for us when necessary .
Driver and trucker , were well trained and they explain many things to my daugthers about animals and Mara life .

In the eve returning to the camp we always found a fireplace burning with seats around it and the aperitive served with Hot Samosa .
Dinner is served in the main tend and the food shows the Italian managment , Mama betty proudly explain us what has been prepared for dinner , what is the choice and which wine will be served with the food .

The camp is just seven double tends plus one suite tend and one Villa Tend .
The Villa is incredible , it is the largest Tend in the Mara , about 250 square meters of elegance lux but in a perfect Safari style . two large rooms with private shower and tub bath a fantastic living with a breathless view , Dining room with a table that in the warm evening is moved in the patio and you can have dinner under billions of stars .
At the Mara any mosquitos wil disturb you .

Time to leave the Mara arrives always too fast , our hearts full of incredibles pictures !!

We spent three nights at Muthaiga - and we were the only guests. In other words, we had all the extremely friendly staff and Elisabetta (the manager) for ourselves - frankly speaking, those were probably the four most luxerious days in our lifes :-)
We stayed in the Berkerly Safari Villa - just for the fun of it: you should bring this 'tent' to a regular European camp site and ask for a place to set it up... they would probably have to lease additional land - it is HUGE. Room stewards were very friendly, kept the tent impecably clean and where always around, when needed.
Food was awsome! Dinner starts with drinks at the camp fire - very romantic under the open sky... the chef creates wonderful italian influenced african dishes. We enjoyed the variety of good food every day. The waiters do a great job too.
As for Leonard - our driver - and Kanunka - our Massai spotter - they have been a great company. They gave us a beautiful insight to the Massai Mara - animals, landscape and light....
Last but not least, the place is managed by Elisabetta, who ha been hosting in a very personal way - if we had a hotel ourselves, we would ask her to manage it... getting to know Elisabetta is a very good reason on its own to travel to Muthaiga Safari Camp!

Room Tip: If you can afford Berkely Safari Villa go for it....

My husband and I were very fortunate to be given a unique opportunity to stay at Black Leopard camp. A magical experience to be able to camp in sheer luxury, enjoy delicious food and to witness the most amazing landscape with wildlife in abundance we thought too good to be true!
Our tent/villa named Berkley Cole was spacious and most comfortable with a decking straight out onto the bush where we could relax and listen to the birds and other wildlife as they roamed around. The main tent is beautiful with it's Colonial style, designed to give that real 'Out of Africa' feel, Elisabetta the manager is very friendly and we enjoyed her company around the camp fire both nights with our G&T's talking about everything we had seen on our bush drives. All the staff were extremley efficient, and we felt very safe at night with the Massai guards keeping watch. Leonard our driver together with Kanunka were excellent guides, and our safari's were truly amazing, seeing cheeta with 3 cubs one of my highlights! then Leonard found us 4 elephant families on the way back to the air strip. I felt very emotional as we drove away from Black Leopard camp, I just hope we will be able t o visit again some day. .

This was the second time that I stayed at the Muthaiga Safari Camp/Black Leopard Camp (www.muthaigasafaricamp.it) between 2010 and 2012. The first time that I stayed at the Camp, I was travelling with my partner. We had a truly amazing experience. As we always like to return to the same place (there is not need to change if loved It), I decided to bring my family (parents, brother and wife, 2 kids: 7 people in total including myself) while they were visting me in Kenya during last August 2012. I personally did not expert that our stay would be so memorable and even better than the first time. The rooms are absolutely lovely: spacious, very clean and extremely comfortable: it was so difficult to leave the bed in the morning even though we knew that we could not miss the amazing Masai Mara. The food is just increbile. I love to cook and eating well is not negotiable. The breakfast was extremely well prepared and we’ll never forget how lovely it was to sip a nice cup of coffee with a croissant under an Acacia tree while witnessing the migration. Truly remarkable. The same shall be said for the lunch in the bush. Another unique feature of the Camp is that you may leave early in the morning (prior to the sunrise) and return at the camp around sunset. We loved the fact that you can actually spend the whole, day at the Mara admiring the landscape and the animals without going back and forth from and to the hotel (like too many places at the Mara tend to impose onot their clients). The sundowners were the perfect end of the day. It was really fabolous to sit around a lovely fire, admire the stars, drink a glass of wine and recount the marvels witnessed during the day. All my family members and I will always remeber our stay at the Muthaiga Safari Campa s on eone the greatest moments of our lives together. Thank you Elisabetta, Leonard and all the staff for your incredibile and impeccabile help. You’re just amazing. WE WILL BE BACK SOON!!

I traveled with my 12 year old daughter and two friends. We loved the tranquil property and the fact we were outside the Maasai Mara on our own private land, but within easy travel distance of the Maasai Mara proper. The staff was amazing and saw to our every need. We are vegetarians, and the chefs created the most delectable food. The sundowners parallel the best I've ever had anywhere - pure magic. Highlights were the sundowner on a promnitory near the camp and a trip to the waterfall through private Maasai land where we saw a herd of elephant grazing at sunset. The camp owner kindly checked in on us and made himself available during what for him was a very busy time. We heartily recommend (what is now called Black Leopard Camp) this property and hope to return sometime soon.

Room Tip: The tents are very comfortable and the villa is incredibly spacious and beautifully appointed; perfe...

If you truly want to experience the Kenyan bush and be treated in luxurious style at the same time, then come here!!!! Everything was absolutely perfect, all the little details that I would have never dreamed, the food, the service, the game drives, the fire at night and much much more!!!! I have stayed at other camps but none came close to the quality of this one. Not once did I ever doubt my decision to stay here. The staff were Polite and helpful at all times, if I wanted something it was there before I could blink an eye! The quality of camp and service was outstanding, the ambiance was amazing and the wildlife from the family tent was spectacular! Nothing went wrong my whole trip and it truly made me forget about all the worries of life! Thank you so much!!!

Black Leopard Retreat is your home away from home in the Maasai Mara. The camp offers you a unique personalized experience, in one of the last remaining unspoilt areas of the Mara. The camp is situated in 380 acres of our private leased land, nestled on the side of a hill with magnificent views over one of the most beautiful sceneries in the world. The lush woodlands, hills and two fresh water springs on our site, offer a unique experience of total privacy, away from the busy Masai Mara minibus's. Located in the Olderkesey Conservancy, the camp can be reached from the Keekorok airstrip served by scheduled flights from Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi & Diani. The drive from Keekorok takes you through valleys and plains, across seasonal rivers and over hills, made famous by "Out of Africa". An experience that will stay with you for many years to come. As you approach the camp you will encounter roaming Masai Morans, dense woodlandsland with lush vegetation, fresh water springs, sweeping views, and grassy hills. The camp is located at an altitude of 1800 Mts, malaria free with no required vaccinations. The Mara is world famous for its abundat wildlife; Elephants, Giraffes, Zebras, Gazelles, Lions and Wildebeests live undisturbed following the rhythm of nature. Buffalo, Zebra & Impala regularly visit the camp's fresh water hole at night. The camp consists of seven luxury safari tents (each one is dedicated to a famous person who has lived in Kenya : Karen Blixen, Beryl Markam, J. Alexander Hunter, F. Courtney Selous, Philip Percival, Denys Finch Hatton and Roy) and two safari villa (dedicated to the famous hunter Berkeley Cole and to Lord Delamere). The safari villas have two en-suite bedrooms respectively 180 and 205 sq. m., with comfortable colonial furniture and a personal butler. The cuisine is a highlight of Black Leopard Retreat. We are proud of our home made Italian food, served with good Italian , South African and French wines. For the the more dynamic the first safari starts at dawn, the best time to view the animals. Guests can wake up with a cup of coffee or tea served on the tent veranda. Breakfast consists of a rich buffet with cakes, croissants, sandwiches, toasts, cornflakes and accompanied by coffee, tea & fresh fruits. Lunch is served at 1.pm, but clients can choose to have a bush lunch served on along the river banks, on top of hill overlooking the Masai mara and Serengeti, or simply on teh wide open plains. Tea time at five o’clock is a ritual with homebaked cakes. If you wish, you can go for a safari at dusk, exactly when the lion starts hunting. Appetizers with ‘pizzette’, ‘samosa’ and ‘bruschette’ wine and beer is served around the fire at sunset. Candle light dinner is generally served at eight thirty p.m. consiting of two first courses of your choice, two second courses, several side dishes, dessert. Coffee or spirits are served around the fire, in the starlight. This is the magic time of Maasai story tales : legend tells about a big black leopard that lurks near the camp, difficult to see in the dark but always present and heard. The safari villa, with a surface of about 185sq.ft., is located in a wonderful area surrounded by a luxurious woodland served by natural fresh water source. ... more   less
