“A Fun Tattinger & Jazz Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011

What a fabulous weekend we had at this magical place! The resort is perched on side of hill overlooking the bay. From start to finish all was a wonderful treat, from the bubbles on arrival to the music on departure. As the resort is on side of hill there are many steps to get anywhere, which is fine for most people. Our room with those views was very comfortable, with small but excellent kitchenette, good sized lounge& bedroom. Everything about this resort is tasteful in a nature loving way. We enjoyed walks through the bush although a little muddy in places due to being winter, & plenty of birdlife on the way. The highlight of the weekend was the degustation dinner on the Sat night, wow 10 courses with matching wines!! The Chef did a superb job, his combinations spot on. The food all weekend was great & as the resort was full everything went smoothly. The manager Pip is a gem & how she remembered everyone's names is beyond me?!!

We stayed here for three nights at the end of a two week sprint across the South Island and it was a fantastic end to a great trip. Since we visited in June which is off season, we were one of no more than three couples staying at once. consequently, the Resort was beyond quiet, making is very easy to relax.

At the same time, you can stay as busy as you desire. If coming in winter I recommend two full days at a minimum, one for water and one for land. Our day out on the water was in a chartered boat captained by Gordon who was a fantastic Captain. He took us arond the islands, fishing, and skeet shooting. The second day we took a long hike on the surrounding trails and visited the spa in the afternoon.

The food and accommodations are beyond reproach and the staff is extremely friendly. The resort probably feels different in summer when the place is packed, but we loved it in winter and would strongly advocate visitig then.

Room Tip: Suite 1 is detached from other suites

We stayed at the Bay of Many Coves for 3 nights in December. This was the first stop of our 3 week trip on the south island. What a fabulous place. The room was lovely. Very comfortable, tastefully furnished and great views from everywhere. The food was delicious. We arrived after a long trip from San Francisco, walked into the restaurant on our way to the room, and I was immediately handed a latte and a fresh cookie to munch (the first of many). Really good lattes and the cookies were addictive. Pip the manager went out of her way to answer our questions (both before and during our stay) and cheerfully made arrangements for us. Transportation from Blenheim to Picton, boat ride to Ship Cove the next day for a tramp (hike) on the queen charlotte track and other small details that meant the difference between a good experience and a great one. The morning we left Nick spotted dolphins in the Sounds and away we went in the zodiac boat for a close up experience that was just the best. If you are going to the south island, the Marlborough Sounds and the Bay of Many Coves should not be missed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bay of Many Coves. Lovely, spacious suites, all with spectacular views of the beautiful Queen Charlotte's Sound. The staff was very attentive. The restaurant is top notch, but portions are small and after 3 days we were pretty bored with the limited menu. The food portion of our bill really added up.
I'd highly recommend the trip to Motuara Island. The bird life was fascinating and dense - almost deafening!

The Bay of Many Coves resort is truly one of the nicest places in the world to vacation………………..Strong words but based on some observations. The Location is amazing; the views from each villa are just breathtaking. Looking down over the bay you can witness, Dolphins swimming leisurely around, Various birds including Cormorants fishing; Water Taxi & other miscellaneous water craft & of course the water itself, perpetual motion, sunlight playing off its surface like a million diamonds, or if you are lucky an equally bright moonlight which highlights the myriads of Stars clearly visible thru the pure night sky.

The Bay of Many coves resort is not just the “view”, The villa themselves are well appointed, comfortable, with tasteful furnishing & great fixtures, like a top class Bathroom, nice little kitchen, well stocked Fridge & individual balconies overlooking a superb view.

Service is also top notch, from the moment you arrive & are greeted at the jetty, to the golf cart which deliveries your bags to your villa & especially service is highlighted in the evening at dinner time, superb cooking in a romantic atmosphere, 5 star foods with 6 star service & presentations.

You cannot arrive at the resort by road, but a water taxi from Pictoncosts NZD 40 per person each way, also available are Helicopters or personnel watercraft, the resort have a few hiking trails which are not for the unfit, especially the walk up to the lookout is strenuous to say the least, but is very enjoyable especially if you’re lucky enough to be joined by “merlot” the resident dog. What a great feature Merlot is, he never tires of walking & especially never tires of playing Fetch.

Close by the resort is the Queen Charlotte Trail, known as one of the best hiking trails in NZ, also Kayaking & other water activities are available.

Great moments are possible at The Bay of Many coves resort, on our first night whilst sipping a TeWhare Ra Pinot Gris on our balcony we spotted Dolphins in the cove, a quick call to Reception & less than 5 mins later we are being Chauffeured by Danny in the resort Rubber dinghy out onto the water amongst a pod of 40-50 playful Bottlenose Dolphins, as sunlight played off the water like a billion diamonds these lovable playful mammals swam amongst us, teasing the Dinghy all the while, a magical moment that made our vacation.

If you are looking for a real R&R break, with stunning views to match and great food, then look no further than this resort. It is pricey, but figure that this is a reflection of the logistics in getting supplies to this isolated area as well as the cost of hiring the great staff that they have here. This is a Club Med but without the kids (though children are welcome). Once you set foot on the resort the only stressful question you need to ask yourself is what time you want to eat. Everything else is taken care of for you. We spent a lazy afternoon kayaking around Queen Charlotte Sound, indulged in an in-house spa treatment and challenged ourselves with a walk uphill. And that idyllic setting? Well nothing quite beats lazing on a comfortable day couch, gazing out onto the Bay of Many Coves. The accomodation was very well appointed. Heaven!
