My husband and I stayed at the GN, Biloxi, 9/11-9/15. This was both our first time to Biloxi, but we frequent other gambling towns, so definitely have a "standard' when it comes to a casino resort. From check-in to check out, we had an excellent time at the Golden Nugget. You can definitely tell this casino is making an effort to become top notch, and it is well on it's way.
We stayed in room 956, by request, which was a newly renovated room. The new rooms are modern in design, with a large flatscreen TV. The amenities are basic, at best. We did not have a fridge in our room, though it looked like one of the cabinets was outfitted for one. No microwave either. We didn't spend much time in our room anyway, so that was not a huge issue. The most amazing thing in the room, for me, was the darkening shades. The window treatments when closed, make it look like midnight in the room at all hours of the day. 2 mornings we were woke up around 6:30 by construction noise, so those darkening shades came in handy when we caught a nap later on.
There is a lot of construction occurring. However, I am forgiving about this. We knew this going in and were therefore prepared to hear some banging, be slightly inconvenienced by areas being closed, etc. It is all in a effort to improve the GN even more, so I am fine with whatever needs to be done. They obviously can't close the hotel down while these rennovations are occurring, so there will be some noise and dust, but I don't understand how people can be annoyed by this- it's just part of the deal. We will all enjoy it when it's complete, so keep the end goal in mind!
Next on the list for renovations is the pool area, a new casino, new buffet, and Bubba Gump Shrimp. All of those are needed and will be welcome changes. The pool, most notably, is dated in today's standards. The pool bar wasn't even open when we were there, which was unfortunate, as there was no place to get drinks when sitting poolside- and it was HOT!!!
The location is good for people with a car. You can only walk to the Palace and the Grand from the GN. Hard Rock, Beau Rivage, etc are a 2-3 min drive- or take the casino hopper trolley for $1.25/one way. We had rented a car so made frequent use of the casino's free valet...don't forget to tip. :) Staff was great.
It will be fun to watch the GN grow and change in the next year. You can already tell it is assuming a new image. All the staff we encountered were very nice- from dealers to hosts, front desk to waitstaff...we had no complaints. We did okay in the casino- really well the first couple nights, and then not as well over the weekend.
If you are a laid back person, willing to roll with the changes the GN is going through right now, then I'd recommend a stay at this up and coming resort- I think you'll be happy to get "in" while the getting is good (i.e. inexpensive), as I have a feeling the Nugget will be at the top of the list once their updates are complete.
