It's the same beautiful beaches and water. Fewer shells. You'll be glad you didn't drive. Watch the undertow!

“Nice day trip on the water”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2015

All of the reviews below cover the great boat ride, the dolphins you are sure to see, the courteous crew. If you want to save yourself a bit of bother, rent the umbrella and chairs once there ($25) and buy yourself a cheeseburger ($4.75) - surprisingly good - and a beer ($2.75). I would never swim in the water off Biloxi and Gulfport but this is a good option for those who like to swim in the Gulf. Nice shallow beach gradient with fine sand going out pretty far, so good for small children and very clean beach. I even saw a lady with an infant. Fish in the shallows, even a few rays and jellyfish (so watch out), just enough to be interesting. Sun can be brutal, even in October, so have some sort of shade and use the sunscreen. There were some "extreme" fisherman with fly rods, surf rods and other gear working the western point where the riptides are and they had a great deal of luck with redfish, ladyfish, catfish. Good idea if you want some fishing with not a lot of people around. If you like history, the fort is very interesting with a tour provided by a retired National Park Service employee and her husband (volunteers). However, the mosquitoes inside the fort on the ground level were plentiful and aggressive, so spray up first. (Note to NPS - the mosquitoes might be coming from the open water in the guardroom opening to the the fort's underground cistern - drop a couple of tablets in there or see if there are other open water sources where they are breeding) This affected the tour (lots of slapping and inattention) which I had specifically come to take. Still interesting, although the tour guide who gives the tour on the second level of the fort should take a cue from the questions he is asked (how long did it take to re-load the 15" Columbiad gun?). Still, a great tour of a remote site which many will not see. Overall, a great experience (9 AM to perhaps 3 PM) and something that kids are sure to enjoy. I think to reserve a spot you need to call 48 hours out, otherwise simply show up and see if there is room.

“Great day trip!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2015

We loaded up for the day and took a boat over that was about an hour ride which was a great time to watch for dolphins which we saw quite a few. There is a concession area on the boat. Prices were reasonable. When purchasing your tickets to get on the boat go ahead and purchase chairs and umbrella rentals if you don't bring any. The money was well spent because we didn't have to tote them across the island...it's about a 10-20 minutes walk across. Be sure you bring comfortable shoes you'll be wearing them on the beach too because the black sand is HOT! We ate at concession stand on beach for lunch but others brought their lunch. They served burgers, etc. for reasonable prices and they were good! Purchase a refilled drink because you will get your moneys worth out of it. We refilled several times. Bring a float or purchase there they are fairly inexpensive but my son loved floating in it. Water is pretty shallow so you can go out a long way. Also, watch for dolphins they my swim right by you. Also saw crabs and other fish. When loading the boat be on the look out for ocean life. We saw lots of fish and sting rays. Overall a great day! Oh, don't forget to tour the fort either once you get there or on our way back and don't forget sunscreen!!!
