“A Blessing at Carriage Hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2011

My husband and I started out from the Twin Cities on an adventure weekend, not knowing where we would end up for the night. It is by chance that we stayed at the Carriage Hills in Winona. With over 30 years of enjoying B&Bs, our blessed experience at Carriage Hills has become our most enriched and memorable. Our charming room was well appointed and considerably larger than most others that you find in a B&B. Our bed was very comfortable, and the quaint fireplace provided both extra heat on the chilly November night as well as romantic ambiance. Breakfast was served in the porch room by Don and Laura, one of his college helpers. It was delicious, especially the very fresh raspberries and strawberries. Don also makes a superb hot chocolate with fresh whip cream! It was a wonderful morning of lively conversation with Don and the other guests, who are repeated visitors to the Inn because of the relationship that they have developed with both Don and his wife Deb. Carriage Hills has become a home away from home for the guests who travel regularly to Winona. There are many great things to say about the Inn, but the highlight is Don himself. He is an Economics Professor at the college, as well as a successful entrepreneur and world traveler (especially India). He is also an incredibly intelligent man with a generous heart and spirit who dedicates much of himself to family, students, friends and community. He has a servant's heart and looks to mentor and help those that are put in his path. Our wish is that all the blessings that Don and Deb have provided to others will be returned back to them in abundance. Future stays in Winona will definitely be at the Carriage Hills B&B.

First, It is not clear when you arrive where you need to go to be greeted. We were confused and wandering around with bags and pillow in hand looking for a sign or someone to help us before we accidentally ran in to other guests and they pointed us upstairs where the owner was working. When we found him at the top of the stairs in the hallway he used his key to open our room and then never came back to welcome us or explain how things work at the B&B. A couple minutes later a staff member came up and gave us our own room key and did her very best to let us know everything we need. She was very nice! Ultimately, however, we just made ourselves at home and figured things out on the fly. During our two day stay, we observed two other groups of guests having the same problem upon arrival.

The Carriage House Bed and Breakfast is located directly across the street from Winona State University and on a city block that is dominated by student occupied rentals which means loud partying all night long on the weekends. While this isn't under the control of the owners, it's unfortunate and was a real detriment. I should also mention that this was WSU's homecoming weekend and I am positive the noise was much louder than average. Perhaps on a more average weekend, this wouldn't be a problem. But with the rate at which student rental housing turns over, I don't think you could predict from semester to semester whether the tenants next door will be the partying sort or not.

Calling this place a "Bed & Breakfast" is a stretch. It's a "Bed" for sure (and nice cozy one actually- the bed/bedding felt like grandma's house); however, "Breakfast"- not so much. You would get more variety and the same quality food if you were to be enjoying the free continental breakfast at the local Motel 6. You get your choice of a breakfast bread (croissant, muffin or bagel) with fruit and either juice, coffee or tea. That's it. AND, I am sure the baked goods are simply bought at the local supermarket. I was really hungry and the croissant was just fine; but, I would expect more from a B&B. Perhaps this was clear on the website, but I might have just missed it or something!

One thing to be aware of is that there is not much privacy between rooms. The Carriage House, where the guest rooms are located, is not well insulated and thus you can hear everything going on in the entire place very easily. Not much privacy for couples'! Also, it's cold..brrrrrrrrrr.

Finally, when we were ready to check out at 7:15am there was nobody to be found. We weren't instructed about leaving procedures, so we just left! Overall, the visit was awkward and a little strange. But, hey, that's the deal with B&B's I guess- the quirkiness is part of the charm. I wish we would have known all of these things before we booked the room though!

Very comfortable, great host, unique character in the facility, great breakfast, great location and a very reasonable rate. We got so much more for our money by finding Don and the Carriage House! Really enjoyed site seeing the bluff country on both sides of the Mississippi.

Room Tip: Toy room was just the right size for us. Very affordable. Yet we got to see the larger rooms with ja...

This was my first B&B experience, and it certainly won't be my last.
Friendly, cheerful owner (Don, we didn't meet Deb) and staff, wonderful fruit and coffee at breakfast and the nooks and crannies of the Carriage House itself were all charming. The neighborhood is lovely, too - would qualify as an Historic District anywhere.
Plus, the "gay friendly" icon on the web site was the "call them!" tipping point.

Room Tip: The Toy Room "felt" small, but our luggage included a large harp - takes up a lot of space...

Our thanks to Professor Don and wife Deb for making us feel so welcome and comfortable at the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast. Their go-to girl Lauren took great care of us, too!

The old carriage house must have been a real marvel when it was built by one of Winona’s founders; we understand that it could hold SIX carriages along with the horses, plus housing for stable boys back in the 1800’s. Now it’s tastefully converted to a cozy bed and breakfast in a historic Winona neighborhood. We stayed in the Conrad Bohn room – named for the lumber baron and original owner of the property. Our room was clean, comfortable, nicely decorated, and had it’s own bathroom with shower. Not a lot of room for our big suitcase, but we managed just fine for our stay.

Right outside our room was the refreshment-stocked refrigerator for guest use. Bottled water, pop/soda, WINE, etc. – we had a nice relaxing glass of wine and time for talk each night before bed! Downstairs is the enclosed porch area for breakfast. What a nice way to start the day – fresh fruit, muffins or croissants, juice and hot coffee – all in the sunny porch with other guests and Don engaged in interesting conversation. Why would I ever stay at GenericInn again!?

The Carriage House location is great – close to the Winona State University campus and all the related school activities which was important while we moved our daughter in! At the same time, you’re only a few blocks from downtown Winona and the mighty Mississippi. Head in the opposite direction from the B&B, and you’re walking a few blocks – or riding the bikes that Don and Deb provide – over to scenic Lake Winona!

All in all, we had a great stay. Definitely recommend the Carriage House B&B next time you’re in Winona!

Came to Winona to visit friends, and remembered this B&B. They did a great job making us feel welcome, and offered tons of extras (bicycles, etc.). The rooms were clean, nicely decorated, and quiet, and breakfast was quite enjoyable. We'll definitely be back!

Room Tip: There are 4 rooms, and they have good descriptions of each on their website.
