I've visited three times now, which almost didn't happen. Let me explain.
First visit, the old guy was there. He must have been in a bad mood because he was very terse with me and my initial impression was he felt irritated to have a customer actually visit and want to buy something. It was my first visit, so when he barked out "how many" before I had even had a chance to peruse..I was put off. I eventually selected several different standard cake donuts and a sugar and a glazed raised. Having read reviews on several sites, I knew to bring cash. Mr. Grumpy barked out the total, I dropped the cash and got out of dodge. Got home, bit into a cake donut and it was the worst donut I've ever had. I believe it was completely fried, through and through. I spit that out, threw it away in disgust and pulled out another. Same thing. Checked all cake donuts I bought, all same story. So I tossed them all, half a dozen. Very disheartened, I tried one of the raised. It was good, not great. I was thinking what the heck, its all over the Internet that this place is the bomb, not a bomb. I decided I must have caught them on a very, very bad day and I'd give em one more shot.
Visit 2, about a week later: This time a really pleasant older lady was minding the counter. My interaction with her was a stark opposite of my first visit. I felt welcomed. I decided to give up on cake donuts though, and just got a few raised. Sugar, choco frosting, and glaze. 3 for me, 3 for gf. Got them home, ate, and they were quite good, though not great. Good enough that I decided a rubber match needed to take place.
Visit 3, a few days ago: Old dude was there, this time very friendly and welcoming. Again I just got a few raised and a couple french crullers this time. The raised donuts are decent, I'll get them on every visit. My gf sampled the crullers and she said they were good.
So there you have it, three visits ranging from horrible to good. I think this is a solid donut store but I honestly don't see what all the hype is about. I've had better. But like I said, this place is solid. I'll go back when I'm in the area for sure, though I dn't think I'll ever get cake donuts here again.
