My bride and I were married on September 1st on the patio at Grand Superior Lodge (GSL). We had both vacationed on the North Shore before and loved the natural beauty of the area. We choose GSL because of there package deals for weddings and amazing location. The package deal took care of many of the small items during a wedding. When you first look at the package costs they may seem steep, but if you look into if further it has a number of unnamed benefits. The first and foremost stress relief on the bride. Brides have enough things to think about on their wedding day, I genuinely believe she enjoyed her day more not having to worry about food, linens, table settings, ceremony/ reception space set up/tear down ect... All she had to focus on was our own decorations we made and getting ready. Additionally, with the package, the wedding coordinator (reba) works with you to tweak things so your days goes how you want. We modified our contract several times and she was very reasonable and responded in a timely fashion.
On to the wedding it's self: It was beautiful!!! We have breathtaking pictures on sight and at nearby Split Rock Lighthouse that we will cherish for our lifetime. We were blessed with perfect weather and a nice breeze off the lake. The patio ceremony space was clean, and well maintained (great landscaping). GSL did forget a podium for our officiant, which was a rather small flaw in the grand scheme of things. The reception hall is in a convenient location as guests only had to walk maybe 30 feet. The reception hall was good as well and everything you expect for the price. GSL really shined in the cuisine offered. All guests had more than enough to eat and the food was spectacular. No guests had any complaints, just heavy, heavy praise. We went with the salmon, quartered chicken with a steak craving station. Phenomenal.
Every wedding couple hopes people with enjoy the dance after the reception, but reality is not everyone gets into it. So instead of having many of the guests stare at the rest of us dancing, they could enjoy a sunset bonfire patio area (the ceremony space) and switch between the two areas with ease. (as mentioned before about 30 feet away from each other. It keeps everyone entertained. Being so close to the shoreline also allows for the photographer to breifly pull you from the dance to get the most beautiful sunset photos Lake Superior has to offer. We choose to cut our dance off at ten, and we had a bonfire on the far north cabins adirondack area. GSL provided us with chairs, firewood, s'mores and a moon lighten lake superior to help our guests and ourselves to wind down after and perfect day.
One thing you worry about with a venue that does multiple weddings a weekend is set up and tear down especially when you are bringing in decorations. The staff, even the maintenance personal, were very helpful and we had plenty of time for set up and tear down.
As stated previously, we had perfect weather. It has crossed my mind that if it had rained, I'm not sure this review would have been as positive. Maybe we were naive but our backup plan for rain was nonexistent. I can see GSL moving the ceremony to the tent outside in mid to light rain and it being alright. The only complaint from guests was the drive, as most came from 5+ hours away, but they then quickly realized why we choose GSL.
Overall, our experience was great!
Quick shout out to David Owen Photography, was great to work with on leading up to the ceremony and outstanding the day of.
