“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We chose not to take the guided tour and just went on the lighthouse. While we had that time alone, we were able to talk to the "lightkeeper" and ask many questions that we might not have been able to ask had we been in a group. If it isn't offered, ask to hear the foghorn. We were also the only ones in the lightkeeper's house and again were able to spend a little more time and converse a little more with the wonderful people there. This is a really beautiful place and I would recommend it to anyone.

“Split Rock Lighthouse Rocks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

It was a cold & rainy day. The lighthouse had an actor in uniform and a nice fire in the wood burning stove. We were allowed to tour the grounds without taking a guided tour, although, there was an option to take a guided tour.

The gift shoppe was a little pricey.

“Magnificent Lighthouse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

Split Rock Lighthouse was a highlight of our visit to the North Shore, though we hadn't expected to have to pay to see it. Had we checked ahead of time, we would have realized this is a large tourist attraction with the attending gift shop, snack bar, admission fee ($9.00 p/p). That being said, it was a beautiful, charming lighthouse. Be aware that there's a long walk to/from the viewing area, as well as (I believe) an extra fee to go to the actual lighthouse. We didn't have the right tickets to do that, so instead took the long, steep, rocky path to the viewing area. This was hard on our 3-year old, just FYI. It certainly is magnificent and something not to be missed. People leaving gave us their entrance wristbands in the parking lot and said they weren't that impressed (for the money). If you just want a picture, might work just as well to pull off the road and get as close as you can, and get the pictures, for free.

“Short and Sweet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

After touring other lighthouses, this one came as a shock because it is only one flight of stairs to the top! The 150-foot height of the light above Lake Superior comes from its extraordinary and scenic perch atop Split Rock. What makes it worth the visit is the scenic setting and the surprisingly detailed history of the place, available on the short guided or self-guided tour, and the costumed interpreters in the lighthouse and the keepers' quarters. The museum is good, too, with things for the kids to do. Also, the movie is great. Expect to spend two hours or so.

“Worth the visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

This attraction is very interesting. Take the time to watch the short video before walking around as it allows one to appreciate the site a lot more. We also took in the guided walk. Again, well worth it as there is a lot of interesting information shared.
The site is well kept although it can get very busy in peak times. Go early to avoid the crowds. Going up inside the lighthouse is maybe not best suited for people who have mobility issues as there is a spiral staircase that is quite steep and the standing area up top is quite narrow. But do it if at all possible.
The Head Keeper's house is interesting to tour through as well. It gives a great peek into the lives of the family who lived there.
