“Not the 'WOW' factor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

We went to Fortune Bay Casino over the long MEA weekend. While the area and the scenery were beautiful - the hotel/casino/resort were just average. The rooms were clean and the housekeeping staff did a good job keeping it clean. Bathroom was small and very basic - no frills. We traveled with a family with a handicapped child and were able to get connecting rooms - that was nice. The pool and hot tub were clean and basic - everything you would expect - nothing above and beyond. There was only one restaurant open plus the deli in the casino - so the eating choices were very minimal. The casino was very smokey and smelly - which is one reason we didn't eat at the deli inside the casino. But - the casino has large doors that separates it from the rest of the resort - which is nice since it keeps the smoke contained (must be why it is very smokey inside). I liked that the casino was two levels - and the entrance was just down the hall from our room. There were only 15 or so poker machines - many, many penny slot machines. Overall - not impressed with the casino - would have liked a little more selection of poker machines.
We would have like to take a boat out since it was nice weather and the lake was still - but the marina was closed and all the boats had been taken out for the season. They should mention this on the website - seemed a little misleading.
We went to the Wolf Center - the Bear Center - and the Soudan Mines - all three were very cool and worth the trip into Ely. Like I said before - the scenery and environment are second to none.
Overall - an average stay in an above average area of the state. I would like to come back in the summer when we can get a boat and hit a round of golf.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that faces the lake - remarkable views of one of Minnesota's gems.

Good afternoon:

Thanks for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us. We’re sorry that you were not impressed with our restaurant and that you felt the grill was off-limits due to cigarette smoke in our casino. We do have nightly buffets, as well as a wide selection of dinner options, so I’m surprised you weren’t able to find a more satisfying dinner.

In speaking with our slot manager, video poker is one of our favorite games at Fortune Bay. Over the past six months we have added great new pay tables paying back over 97%. We have a comfortable video poker area on the 2nd level of the casino with just the right amount of privacy.

The slot manager thanked you for your suggestions about adding additional video poker games. We look to be doing just that in 2013, by bringing multi-hand poker like 100 Hand. We will also be adding action poker games, including a couple more Gaming King machines to our mix.

Regarding the marina, we apologize that you could not rent a boat, but the demand for rentals greatly decreases once the long Labor Day weekend is over. Couple that fact with uncertain fall weather and it just doesn’t make sense to keep the watercraft in the lake at this time of year.

We do hope you come back next year to experience the lake, as well as The Wilderness at Fortune Bay golf course, as these two amenities are big draws for guests staying with us. Thanks again for writing, have a great rest of the weekend!

I have never stayed at this hotel before but I have to say it way exceeded any expectation that I have. It was greatly appreciated especially after the bad experience the night before in Duluth. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Which started with the wonderful Representative at the front desk who advised us, if we signed up for players card (which was free) prior to checking in we would get our fire place suite room we had booked for $90 vs $150.00 + tax. We had no idea of that, she would not have had to tell us and we would be none the wiser. The hotel could have shut up and made more money off of us but they didn't. This wonderful Customer Service followed us everywhere we went, from the players club representatives, to the manager in the Casino, the bartenders, the hostess and waitresses in the restaurant and everyone that we came across at our stay. This is a huge wonderful reflection of this hotel when not just one employee shines but everyone is a star. It says a lot. Now lets go to the room. It was beautiful! I cannot believe that we got such a wonderful room at such a great price. It was the fireplace suite. A living room, dining/kitchen area and separate bedroom. It was cold but the balcony was still a great addition and you could see the lake and golf course from our window. If I had to critique one thing and it is small, it would be that I would have liked better lighting. The lighting was so dim. There seemed to be plenty of lamps but the bulb wattage must have been very low. What was meant to be a one time stay kind of thing turned into a we are definitely coming back and to stay longer next time. I will also highly recommend this hotel to anyone that I talk to. Thank you for renewing my faith in the Hospitality industry and for the great stay!

Had our Anniversary coming up, so I decided to get away. We had the King with balcony, and it was a very nice room overlooking the gulf coarse, hole 9 I think. The room seemed clean, but a nice stain in the carpet was kind of gross. We had the 2 nights in that room, and booked the third night in a fireplace suite. After 2 nights of sleeping on a rock hard bed, I cancelled the third night as I didn't sleep well, wide awake after much tossing and turning. The hotel staff was excellent, and so was the restaurant staff at the T, very nice young man there. The casino was alot of fun, staff at the bar were good, never had anyone come up to us while gaming asking us if we wanted anything to drink though. There is a Mexican game, seats 2 like a bench seat, that was alot of fun.
I have now recieved some free nights 2 in fact, I have decided to go back this month, but realize the beds are hard, bringing a girl friend instead of the husband might work out better. I may bring a sleeping bag or 2 for extra comfort on the beds, and my own pillows from home. I did tell the front desk the beds were very uncomfortable our first stay on our honeymoon, but I guess they appologized and didn't take anything of the bill.

Room Tip: Beds are very firm/hard. Bring a pillow top or something if you don't like xxxx firm beds! I was...

Good morning:

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with other travelers regarding your recent stay at Fortune Bay Resort Casino.

We will make note of your comments to each department that you wrote about.

I spoke with our housekeeping manager a short while ago and was informed that we will be replacing mattresses in all of our premium rooms with Serta Euro top mattresses. This upgrade will be done over the next few months. As an FYI, mattresses in our original section of the resort were already replaced.

If you need extra pillows on your next stay, please don’t hesitate to ask our housekeeping staff who will be more than happy to take care of that request, or any other request, so that your stay will be an enjoyable one, thanks!

Our stays here have always been enjoyable and we are making reservations for our summer trips for the third year in a row. The service from check in to check out has always been excellent. We especially enjoy the pool time reserved for adults in the evening after being out fishing all day! The casino is fun and our rooms have always been clean. The food is okay, the buffet is small so check it out to see if a menu choice would be better for your tastes.

Thank you for your comments. We look forward to your upcoming visit this summer!

As an FYI, we are in the process of adding a steakhouse to our property (it would be located where the current lobby lounge is). We are confident that this additional dining option will be a hit with all of our guests and invite you to try it out when you return this summer.

We are also in the process of renovating our original rooms that were brought in on 1996, as well as our newer rooms that were introduced in 2007 as a part of our continuing expansion.

Thanks again for your comments and thanks for your continued business!

Facilities were great and service excellent. Casino was clean and respectible. The golf course was tops, best I've ever played. Order off the menu rather than the buffet. Wilderness dining was good. Sight seeing for fall peak color was great.

Room Tip: View of golf course and lake if possible

Second time staying here(previous stay was several years ago) Stayed in one of their "premium" rooms. The room was dark, lights had low wattage bulbs, the balcony was small and room with a view-didn't have one. The layout of the room is strange, needs an update even though it is in the "new " section. Our bath sink was plugged, the shower curtain rod was falling off the wall. The room felt like a cave. It was OK for a night but that is it, probably will not stay again.

Thanks for taking the time to write about your recent experience with our resort.

I spoke with our resort housekeeping manager regarding your complaints. He said that the resort is in the process of changing lighting in all of our rooms (both premium and deluxe standard). The end result will mean better lighting in all of our resort rooms.

Our balconies have earned us many compliments from couples who like to use them for relaxing while enjoying a cup of coffee with their favorite morning newspaper, so I apologize that they were not large enough for you.

If you do decide to pay us another visit, our resort housekeeping manager encourages you to simply call the front desk to have those problems quickly addressed.

Thanks and thank you for your recent business. Sorry that it didn't meet your expectations.

I always make a stop at fortune bay. I usually eat the buffet and spend some money on slots. The food is pretty good. Lots of .01 slots which i like. Not many tables going usually if you like that. It isnt usually too busy on weekdays when i go. I have not stayed there overnight but i imagine it is nice. Worth the drive for a casino i feel.
