“Nice Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

The hotel staff was excellent and very friendly. If you are looking for a nice place in Stillwater this is your place. The rooms are very stylish and very large and comfortable. The beds are a bit soft but still provided a good nights sleep.

Room Tip: Room 317 has a heart shaped Jacuzzi tub

The location is fantastic right next to the river. The room was large. The shower was small. No countertop to put your toiletries on. The food served at breakfast was wonderful. We sat outside, under the covered porch, and watched the up and down bridge on the river. Very relaxing and romantic stay.

Paid way too much money for this room. Decorating was very inferior, no glasses I'm the room, comforter on bed was lumpy and linens inferior for the price of the room. No ice bucket, coffee pot or nice bath supplies you would expect. Room was warm when we arrived and noisy. Watersreet view was of the delivery truck early the next morning. Felt ripped off and wished I had just chosen a regular hotel at $100 less.

My husband and I booked a room at the Water Street Inn because we were in Stillwater for a wedding that was taking place there. We chose this because of the convenience of being right there already and the lack of other options in the area. When we entered our room we were very disappointed. Most notocable at first sight- besides the gaudy decor- was the lumpy bedspread. not just a little lumpy, it looked like there were a half dozen cats sleeping under the cover. The actual mattress was not lumpy, just the comforter, but from underneath it we could see how the filling was all lumped together in some spots, and there was none at all in others. This was not just our room; walking past other rooms as they were being cleaned, I could see that all the other rooms had extremely lumpy comforters too. we also found our bed to be very creaky while trying to sleep, and just not comfortable. Also, our room looked out at a brick building and street, not over the river. The sliding door to the balcony was covered only with a set of vertical blinds, which did not do much to block the noise or light from the street and the sun. I had a hard time falling asleep at all because the noise was so bad, and my husband was waking up at 5am each morning from the sun streaming in through the blinds. While I can ignore the decor not being to my taste, the reason we get hotel rooms is to have someplace to sleep, and we were not able to sleep well here at all.

Other things that bothered us about our room were minor, so I won't get into those things, but the bathroom was also an issue for us. There was simply no counter space on which to put our toiletries! The pedastal sink was cute, but not practical, and the shower took forever to get warm water. I was just about to give up waiting for the water to warm up and just wash in the cold when it finally warmed up enough.

Lastly, the staff- when we could find some- were very nice, but seemed to have all the time in the world. We pretty much had to find menus and seat oursleves for breakfast in the morning. Thank goodness we found the complimentary coffee first. we ordered an overpriced breakfast which took a really long time to arrive at out table (they only had 2 other tables of 2 at the time, and all we ordered was eggs, bacon, toast. Shouldn't have taken as long as it did). Wasn't even very good and cost twice what it should have.

Next time we go to Stillwater, we will try one of the B&B's instead. The Water Street Inn was not worth the price AT ALL, despite their great location on the beautiful St. Croix. We would not stay there again.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the river would probably be quieter and not have the morning sun through the wind...

The Water Street Inn has a good reputation and I had always wanted to stay here. My husband does not especially like the personal nature of bed and breakfasts, but I like the charm. I thought this would be a good compromise. The location, view, and size of the rooms is excellent, but the upkeep leaves something to be desired. The bed was VERY squeaky and uncomfortable (puts a bit of a kink in the romance of an anniversary getaway). Neither of us slept well in it and had sore backs afterward. The décor needs updating - old, tacky wallpaper, dark & dingy hallways, cracked sink, etc... It feels odd and a little creepy. The bathroom was large but lacked amenities. With a bathroom that size, there was room to make it much nicer (no countertop, small, dark shower). I had to wait at least 20 minutes for them to bring out fresh coffee in the lobby one morning. For the price we paid, I expected better. Once we got past the disappointment in the accommodations, we had a nice stay and enjoyed our time in Stillwater. I think I may have to give up some charm and just stay at a "regular" hotel next time.

Room Tip: Stay on the third floor in a room facing the river. Avoid rooms above the conference/wedding recepti...

So, nothing earth shattering here. There are not a lot of options right in Stillwater to choose from (we don't do B&Bs).

Instead of waxing on like others, I will point out a few specifics that I didn't see in the other reviews and possibly some repeated notes.

Had room 310 facing the river - the balcony is small but was nice, two people can stand/sit out there.

The hotel is noisy, run down, and more like a B&B without the B. It is charming at best.

The "suite" had a weird room service type table in it, tv in the bedroom never did get working (they knocked a few bucks off but the rate is insane for this place).

Ice has to be ordered from downstairs, no fridges available, unless you want to label something and they keep it downstairs for you.

A/C was old and noisy but worked ok. The bed was so lumpy it looked like there were cats hiding under the sheets. The poster bed frame had been broken, sort of repaired and subsequently broken again.

Parking is free next door, view of the river is great, this room was not right by the bridge, but a few doors down.

The next night we stayed a couple of miles away at Crossings - half the price, $5 shuttle bus ride or $10 taxi to town, breakfast and coffee included (coffee in lobby and room), fridge in room. Cleaner and newer, still basic, but way better than this.

As I said, if you want to stay in Stillwater, you're limited, but don't expect much from here. They actually have room keys on a plastic fob which I haven't seen since a motel in 1970 (or in New Zealand).

Two stars for charming, gorgeous high ceilings and view of the river/location

I would never stay here again nor host an event here. The rooms weren't historic, they were archaic. The owners should try staying in the rooms to conduct a usability study. Mattress? Ancient and lumpy. Pillows? Awful. Bathroom? totally inconvenient.

We hosted a brunch following a wedding and the servers were inept, inattentive and poorly trained. We had to continually ask them for basics at the buffet--like coffee cups, orange juice, plates. It was embarrassing and inexcusably poorly done. The catering manager stepped in when summoned by me, but did not take responsibility for the lackluster service.
