“A Comfortable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2011

We stayed in a studio within a main house and found it very adequate for our needs.
It had a lounge area, bathroom, bedroom with a very comfortable bed, kitchen with lots of goodies for the breakfast the next morning, delicious muffins, yoghurt, fruit, juice, variety of breads, crumpets, croissants, blueberries etc etc.

We felt very comfortable staying there, all our needs were met.

Booked 2 rooms in the B & B (by e-mail through Maddies) for 1 night so we could attend a concert in the Hunter Valley. Price was reasonable and included a continental breakfast which was superb. Rooms were clean (although one was quite small) and fulfilled our requirements. Much better than we had expected.

The issue here is simply the price matching the experience.

From Wotif.com, we paid $220 for a room with 2 singles. For this price in Sydney, you can stay at the Sofitel with a view..

If we'd paid $120 total, we would have been OK.
Instead, we got a room up the road at the back of a very ordinary house, basically on a renovated verandah with a bedroom and bathroom. There was another room next door where you could hear every movement, as well as the occupiers of the main 'house'. You overlooked the backyards of Lorn residents. I suddenly felt more like a backpacker than a BnB-er with money to spend on a nice weekend.

The grounds of the actual Maddies were nicely kept, the breakfast adequate, the lady who attended us willing to please. It was clean, it was OK.. But please dont expect anything more than 'lodging' for the night at this premium pricepoint. Bizarre.

We stayed at Maddies' family accommodation - "woods Cottage"which is off site.
On arrival at Maddie's to collect the key we were greeted with homemade cakes which were setup for us in a rotunda in the gardens. What beautiful grounds. Although our accommodation was around the corner from the main Bed and breakfast we were encouraged to make use of the gardens- which we did.
The "cottage" as we had been warned is very close to the main road. it's furnishings are simple and comfortable, but don't be mistaken they have thought of everything, books DVD player, games etc for the kids. For the adults Real coffee, bottle opener-( for those of us who have not progressed to screw tops) array of toiletries etc .Then there is the bed! A luxurious king size bed - the most comfortable bed I have slept in.
There is a small BBQ area to the side which is a little awkward to access, but to be honest we didn't use it - why would you we you can relax in the spectacular gardens at Maddies?
But the best is always last. THE BREAKFAST IS TO DIE FOR! A huge continental selection and and a cooked breakfast for the heartiest of eaters. Must try the bread and butter pudding. Being a coeliac ,I did not miss out -cooked specially for me was a baked plum and nectarine custard one morning and a apple berry gluten free crumble the next.
Comfortable family accommodation - you have the option to have continental breakfast delivered to the cottage, but do yourself a favour and walk round to Maddies.

We booked weeks ago, and the friend who suggested we stay there was surprised we got in! Now I know why! In plain english it is the worst accommodation ever!

We arrived and were told the B&B was overbooked, even though we politely contacted "Maddies" during the prior week to confirm our reservation. Due to the overbooking were sent to their overflow. An incredibly grotty house up the road - our accommodation was a just completed, a tiny dark, dingy room - cold bathroom, with shower in bath, huge step over into the bath, so pity anyone with knee, hip problems. The bedroom was dark, small & dingy & the television did not work. Not a shower cap to be found in the bathroom.

There is an extremely grotty entrance - just mud & grit really at the bottom of three timber steps, therefore all grit & dirt tramped into the room. No floor coverings. The aspect is onto neighbours grotty back garden or else onto the main road.

"Maddies" did not provide room service - bed left unmade, we asked for clean towels & just presumed that the bed would be made up & that also there would be a quick swish around to clean up, but oh no - floor remained gritty & dirty for two days, bathroom damp & cold & the owners really had a "who cares attitude", they only showed interest when we were leaving & had to pay.

"Maddies" & the overflow (where we stayed) are right on main road so we put up with noisy traffic all night long. It is extrodinary that this B&B can charge the rate they do, A$160.00 per night for grotsville, quite unbelievable! I would have been better renting in the local caravan park for half the price.

To say, staying at "Maddies" was a disappointment would be a gross understatement. It was disgraceful. Therefore I am writing to let people know not to be bothered. The main house looked equally disappointing.

Find a smarter, well maintained property to spend you $'s on. Staying at "Maddies" was a great take, it was also embarassing as friends had recommended it - we hedged around the subject when they asked us what it was like!

There is fabulous accommodation throughout the Hunter Valley - this would have to be at the bottom of the list.

We were also worried about the safety of leaving our gorgeous new Audi outside by the road (there is inadequate parking) & arranged to leave it at our friends property nearby.

I still can't believe Maddies charged us $320.00 for two nights stay & we paid to stay there too. It is such a terrible B&B!

Has put us off trying another B&B that's for sure!
