Owner description: Intriguing because of its narrow gorge which has created many potholes along the bottom of the river.

“A must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

We got an great view of the rugged beauty of the area at this park. Just off Hwy 61 and within a short distance massive amounts of water from the river which was at a higher elevation came surging through a twisted gorge and over several waterfalls. The water fanned out to form a cove inlet to join Lake Superior.

“Lots of waterfalls - great picture opportunities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

There are four paths in all; three of which were open. it's worth it to go upstream and see how the river changes as it moves closet to Lake Superior. Each path has it's own special views. There's no 'one best' view. The upstream path could be difficult for someone who isn't too sure footed as the steps are a bit steep and made from uneven rocks. There is a bench where a person can stop midway and read about the river. The downsteam view also involves steps but there are railings and bridges that help. Really pretty views and mostly shaded which is nice on a hot day.

“Stunning gorge, river, and falls”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

It only takes a few minutes to walk from the park visitor center to the falls of the Temperance River nearest to Superior and see a bit of the gorge and the beautiful entrance of the river into Superior. It is definitely worth the stop and walk.

If you have more time, the park hiking trails inland from Superior provide additional stunning views of the Temperance River and its gorge. We were only able to hike about a half hour along the inland gorge trail but it was amazingly beautiful and unlike anything else we've seen at the other Minnesota state parks (save perhaps Cascade River State Park).

If you have younger children, you will definitely want to keep them nearby and often in hand as there are several straight drops to the river and gorge unguarded by rails. The roadside parking off Highway 61 is free, but you will need a state park pass to park within the state park lots. We were able to purchase a year pass earlier for one year for the entire state for $25.

“One of our favorite camping spots”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

We camped in the E loop of the park facing Lake Superior. The camp spots are nice and spacious. Enjoyed all the hiking trails inside the park. Wonderful for beginner hikers. We especially liked the hike down to the lake shore on the E side. 1 main shower area the rest are out houses for restrooms close to camping spots (they are well maintained). You couldn't ask for better hiking trails outside the park and they are nice and close. Beautiful scenery. Make sure you pack sweatshirts and some rain gear the weather can change pretty fast next to Lake Superior.
