This is a classic hotel that has been well restored. It has a beautiful lobby, comfortably furnished if one needs to wait there. The room was good, reasonably well appointed, and in good condition. It was a bit larger than average. I was part of a group conference so I had a good rate - making it an excellent value.
My list of positive attributes far outweighs the negatives. On the plus side is the room had a closet plus a chest of drawers and a desk - plenty of storage space. Plus a reading chair and ottoman. Also included were ironing supplies, though I didn't need them. There was plenty of light - with four desk lamps the lack of an overhead light wasn't important. The water pressure and temperature were excellent. Also very good was the free wifi and the presence of a programmable in-room safe. I requested a good view and they gave me the best available, but in truth St. Paul doesn't really have the type of vistas you get elsewhere.
The climate control worked fine, but the general temperature was such I didn't use it much. All my interactions with the staff were fine, but I keep to myself once checked in.
On the negative side was the presence of the expensive minibar that filled the refrigerator - I hate those. Also the room was equipped with an ihome clock that can accept an ipod. This seems cool, but it wasn't easy to figure out how to set the alarm. Also there aren't a lot of outlets at the desk for recharging all the modern devices - there are outlets elsewhere in the room, but you may have to put stuff on the floor.
On the personal preference side, I found the bed to be softer than I liked, but I find that with most hotels.
The hotel is well located downtown. But the restaurants and shops I found in the area tend to keep business hours (or a little past). There is a restaurant in the hotel - I only tried breakfast there. It was fine, but nothing special.
Overall I found this to be a very good hotel, particularly at the group rate I recieved. I certainly would stay there again.
