“My least favorite DoubleTree”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

It was okay, but compared to DoubleTrees I've stayed in the Boston area, Southern California, etc. the St Paul one was very average. The facility was a bit dreary, and the first room I was provided smelled like cigarette smoke (my 2nd choice was better).

Hi Lloyd
We are sorry the hotel did not meet your expectations. Around the end of June the renovation will be completed and you will be pleased with how everything turned out.

Truly, nothing great here. The first thing that sticks in my mind is, each time, upon approaching the hotel whether by car or foot; there seemed to always be some street people hanging around the entrance. The hotel for the most part has nothing special or memorable about it. They are redoing the lobby and ground floor. Looking at the plans and the areas currently finished; I really didn't see anything that would give it the wow effect. The hallways and rooms were the same-nothing special. Very average rooms with tiny bathrooms. The bathrooms were so small that had the door been three inches wider, it would have hit the stool as you opened the door to the bathroom. In fact, in order to close the bathroom door, you had to first move into the small space between the stool and counter. Cleaning was good, and supply of the toiletries was also done well. Check in/out seemed slow not only for us but seemingly for a lot of people. That could be because the front desk seems to be temporary during the remodel-but, it should also be noted that it seemed to be staffed by only one person most of the time. What the hotel truly lacked was something it can't control and that was good eating places for dinner in the vicinity. The hotel is connected to other buildings through a second floor sky walk. On the second floor sky walk area-just outside the hotel is a seating area with several eating joints. Mostly sandwiches, bagels, coffee, etc. BUT-the vast majority of them close at 2pm, leaving scarce pickings for dinner. The situation gets far worse on weekends when all of them close for all day Saturday and Sunday. The hotel has it's own restaurant, but the menu is very limited, with considerably higher prices. You could even say the menu is not of a regular menu but that more of a bar menu. We noticed the several days we were there that while other food joints had customers, the hotel's restaurant sat empty. In fact, on a few days, it wasn't even open. You can walk several blocks looking for other restaurants, but for the most part they all served either bar type food, or lunch. The sky walk system is nice and would be much more appealing during rainy or cold/wintry weather. One thing to note though is the area is dotted with parking garages and like any major metro downtown, there is a daily fee for parking your car at the hotel parking garage-$15. We found getting around downtown St. Paul very easy and surprisingly void of medium to heavy traffic. Very light traffic, which means that there was really no noise issue to speak of when trying to sleep night or day. Taking into consideration that one needed to travel for any respectable restaurant for dinner, the rooms being small, and having to pay a daily $15 parking fee; I have to admit most people would be better served by saving the Hilton price for this very average property and book a room somewhere else. In other words, the price is not commensurate with the property or amenities.

Room Tip: No tip will help here. Our experience was such: I asked for a room as high up as possible, one wit...

Thank you for your feed back!
We think you will be pleased during your next visit to see that the lobby and new restaurant is completely finished. Completion date is the end of June. Thank you for your patience during our construction phase. We hope to see you again soon.

We were attending a wedding in the Downtown area of St.Paul and the Double Tree was a recommended hotel. We drove to the hotel from the airport which was about 15 minutes away. There is a pull in by the attached mall but the signage is not great directing you to the lobby entrance as the Lobby area is undergoing a major renovation and they have set up a make shift lobby area to accommodate guests. Check in was very easy and the front desk personnel were very friendly and helpful. The Double Tree offers hot chocolate chip cookies when you check in so don't forget to ask for them if the staff happen to forget. The hotel offers a free shuttle to take you around the downtown area but it is also connected to many buildings by the sky bridges so you can move around the downtown area without going out in the elements (great if it is raining or cold and snowy). There is a restaurant on the second floor and workout facilities on the 3rd floor. Parking is self parking next door but there is a daily charge that is applied to your bill but provides in and out privileges. We got a special rate of $10.00 per day (normally $15.00 per day) because of the wedding (the bride and groom must have gotten the rate when they blocked out the rooms). As a Gold member of the Hilton Hotels we also received breakfast buffet vouchers for the hot buffet in the restaurant. It is a standard buffet with the hot portion of the buffet consisting of eggs, potatoes and bacon and/or sausage. It also included juice and coffee as well as the typical continental portion of a normal hotel buffet. The food was not exceptional but was good for a buffet.

The room was a typical size for a downtown hotel and was fairly quiet. The room had a small refrigerator and a microwave oven. We had a problem keeping the room cool at night but since we only stayed one night it was not an issue we brought to the attention of the front desk. The hotel is a little over a half mile from the State Capital and the river is several blocks away in the opposite direction with both a bike and separate walking/jogging path and a couple of nice parks. We went for a short 6 mile run before breakfast and enjoyed the diversity of the area. There are many restaurants within walking distance that provide a diverse selection of dining options. Check out was quick and when leaving the parking lot, you just drop the parking lot key card in the drop box on the way out. Once the renovation of the lobby is completed, I'm sure the overall experience will be that much better. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are in the St. Paul area.

Even though the Lobby was being remodeled the check-in and overall service was excellent. We were there for a wedding and we were treated special, which is always a good thing. We ate breakfast in the restaurant and the service and quality was above average and the price was very reasonable considering we were in a large downtown city.

even though the hotel was under construction we had a very nice room.. Front desk was very accommodating and got us into adjoining rooms. The only observation I had was when we went to breakfast on the 2nd floor the only way to get back on the elevator was with a room key which was not explained anywhere on the advertisements in elevator or brochures. Luckily we had one on us, but other guests did not and was thankful that we were able to get an elevator for them.

Hi David
Yes, we lock off the elevators for key use only to give our guest added privacy. I will meet with the front desk team to make sure they mention this added security option when our guest arrive.
Thank you for your feedback.

My visit here was quick, but I experience both pro's and cons. CONS: I stayed at this location as it was located right across the street from a conference I was attending. I was surprised to find that there was no valet/bellman available (I arrived around 5pm). Though I was on business, I was traveling with heavy items and no assistance was offered. During check-in, the front desk staff were pleasant, but did not make an effort to make me feel at home. I had dropped many hints that I was from out of town - business travel, 1st time here, long flight, hungry. I was fishing to see if they would indulge me and tell me where to eat, or things to do. But nothing. Crickets! The coffee pot in my room was broken as was the TV. The final Con to this review is that I always seem to ride the elevator with a homeless person. One homeless lady started screaming sexual obscenities at me. Needless to say, I only left my room when I had to. PROS: -The bed was very comfortable - and I slept really well despite being scared that a homeless person was going to break in! -Connected to sky ways and easy to get to/from different buildings. -The coffee pot that was broken was quickly replaced after a phone call. - I got a cookie at check in. Didn't cure my hunger, but it helped.

There is a great skywalk attached to the hotel with tons of places to eat etc. However none of these are open on the weekend! This isn't the hotel's fault of course but very frustrating. They also don't offer any help ordering from somewhere other than the hotel dining which is very expensive, especially for a family. The pool is quite small, no hot tub and was closed due to a scheduled power outage on the first three floors.

Hi Debra
We are sorry for the inconvenience that the pool was closed during your visit. We had to reroute some electrical wires that day due to our construction project. The New lobby is now open !
Also, the new restaurant will be open in just a few weeks.
We were happy to hear everything else was to your satisfaction.
