“Nice for a business trip”

Hilton Garden Inn St Paul City Center

Apr 13, 2008

I stayed here while attending the Star of the North dental convention at River Centre. Normally when in St. Paul I stay at Embassy Suites or the St. Paul Hotel, but this was a last minute booking so those hotels were both full.

Booked this one on Expedia for a King bed, non-smoking room. At check-
in I was told that only smoking rooms were available. I asked if there was any way to get a non-smoking room and that I didn't care if it was a king or not. She went over the other available rooms with her manager and noted I was a Hilton Honors member to him. After a few minutes she asked if it would be OK to put me in a room normally used as a conference room with a Murphy pull-down bed on the top 17th floor, and I said that was fine.

The room itself was very large with floor-to-ceiling windows the length of the room with a great view. It was clean and you could see it had been recently remodeled, but it still looked and felt old in areas. The bed wasn't very comfortable and I also lost all water pressure twice for about a minute - once when brushing my teeth and again when in the shower.

Overall the hotel was just "OK" in my opinion. The elevators were extremely slow and while you are told you can walk to the convention center using the inside skyway system, it is a very long walk. I would stay there again if I had to, but there are better choices in St. Paul.

“Great Location”

As part of the Skyway system, this hotel was in a great location. It was clean and comfortable, but we don't feel that we got our money's worth. We were in town for Winter Carnival, so the price was high - and then, the Front Desk, without telling us, added $5 to our bill for two additional packets of decaf coffee for our room (which we probably could have gotten free from Housekeeping). The Breakfast Buffet ($10.95) served delicious hot omelets; but otherwise, we've had free buffets with better food selections and better quality. This was our first stay at a Garden Inn, but we expected more from the Hilton name.

“A clean and functional place to stay”

We booked a room through Hotwire (we were told we saved about $80 - but this isn't an ad for them) for a Friday night during a college hockey tournament. I read all the reviews from the beginning of this year, and if there were problems before the renovation, they've certainly cleaned up nicely.

Check-in was quick and uneventful, and we were easily upgraded from two double beds to a King. The reviews are correct about the price for parking, though. $9 a night on weekends is pretty steep considering you can park about two blocks closer to the Xcel Energy Center (the primary draw of downtown St. Paul) for $5, and across the street from the arena for $12-$15.

The room was clean, comfortable, and for the most part, quiet. In fact, the only two picky things about the room were that the mini-fridge made a slight vibration noise when turned to the higher settings (but was whisper quiet on the lower settings), and the bathroom door stuck just a little bit. But other than that... it was a fine stay.

We didn't try the restaurant (we elected to eat at the games), and we didn't swim, but I will say the pool looked surprisingly small. It was about the size of three large hot tubs. More of a "dip-your-toes" pool than one you could swim laps in. But again, that wasn't important to us.

In lieu of vending machines, they have a 24-hour pantry with munchies, sandwiches, drinks and travel incidentals. While it wasn't as convenient as having vending on every floor, it does allow them to have a larger selection of items.

For a three-star hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn City Center in downtown St. Paul is a perfectly fine choice. I won't say it went out of it's way to wow us, but overall, we had no complaints.

I was so afraid to stay here because of the horrible reviews I read. I didn't have a choice, because I got it from Priceline. I was pleasantly surprised. It was very clean, comfortable, and nice. I loved that you could walk from building to building without going outside. If I had to pick my "dream location" it would not be in the middle of a city, but that's just my preference. It has nothing to do with the actual hotel itself.

There were a few things that I didn't really care for. First, we came in a few times to find that our bathroom floor was soaked. Apparently, the people above us kept running over their tub. That's not the hotel's fault though. The second was the outrageous parking fee. It's a little cheaper on the weekends, so watch your bill. They tried to charge us the higher fee the entire week, but once I pointed it out, they were very friendly and immediately removed the extra charges. Last, the housekeeping was really "excited" about getting in and cleaning the rooms. I would suggest putting the "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door until you leave for the day.

I think they are really trying. I get the impression from past reviews that the Radisson was bad for so long and they are trying their best to fix what took a long time to bring down. It's not going to be perfect overnight, but it is on it's way. I really enjoyed staying here.
