I stayed at the St. Paul downtown Hilton because I was looking for a hotel that would be a close driving distance to the MN state fair. When calling the reservations line I was trying to use my St. Paul fun card (free from the St. Paul chamber website) but the lady on the phone was nice enough to tell me that I could book the State Fair special which was $139+ taxes (total of $157.07) which included transportation to and from the fair grounds, the complimentary managers reception, and full breakfast in the morning.
Check-in went fast - but they did not tell me how to get to the room or where it was best to park (until I asked). The suites are nice and clean (except for the dirty crumpled up kleenex under the table) but a little bit outdated. It was very nice to have a fridge and microwave in the room, along with a wetbar.
The bathrooms are very small. The tub is pretty old but was clean, the shower had nice pressure. Our toilet had very little flushing power and did get clogged in the morning.
The beds have very nice sheets and blankets so I got a good nights sleep. However, there is as others have said a lot of highway noise throughout the building (not much that they can do about that though).
The managers reception was complimentary from 5-7 pm. This is in the atrium which has a very nice feel to it (almost like you are sitting outside with very soothing noises from the waterfalls). They had a big plate of vegetables and ranch dip out and chips to snack on. You can order all the alcholic (or n/a)( beverages that you want for free, they were weak but who cares if it is free. You can even stock up by bringing them to your room and turning around and getting more :) Which again makes the refrigerator again helpful.
We were able to get free shuttle service around downtown and when you are ready to come back you just call them and they show up in 5-10 minutes. This came very hand and definitely saved a lot of mula from taxi rides. You have got to go to the candystore (Candylane) that is in downtown St. Paul - it is one block down from Walgreens by Wild Times restaurant. They have the best homemade candy and fresh specialty popcorn, for a very reasonable price.
The breakfast in the morning was very nice. They have cereal, juice, fruit, donuts etc. and then you move down the line to the omelet man for fresh cooked to order eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and potatoes. This was very nice and much appreciated.
Overall we were very happy with our stay and would definitely stay here again. If possible you should request a room on the west side of the building (much better view). Oh yeah - and close to the elevators. They have a few elevators that are glass so that on your ride you can look around the atrium but it seems like you always had to wait a few minutes to get on.
The business center is very nice and complimentary. The pool is small but ok (not very deep). The hot tub again is small but nice. The exercise room is very nicely equipped and each of the treadmills has a tv to watch while you are working out.
Did not try the restaurant, lobby store, or bar.
