If you are visiting St. Paul, this is the best place to stay. I found it on google and stayed their twice. Its a great idea (hotel on boat), lovely interiors (beautifully crafted), nice amenities (quilts and bathrooms), and the breakfast is delicious. All the rooms are good, but I like the Pilot House best. The decks and views are beautiful. There is lots of space to lounge, there is a restaurant across the dock, and where else can you stay ON the Mississippi? I recommend it highly, and I stay in *lots* of hotels. THe proprietor is friendly and very accommodating, a good cook, and stays out of your hair (unlike so many b&b owners). Really a great place to stay.

This is a wonderful floating (it's a retrofitted river tow boat) inn, across the Mississippi from downtown St. Paul. Superlatives include: wildlife viewing (eagles feeding in the river), a quiet, respectful ambience, great and hearty breakfasts, and access to a dozen fine restaurants, theaters, and historic architecture.

You are staying on a river boat here. Bet you've never done that before. It was a fun adventure and something new. The hostess was extremely friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was good.

A Great Way To Start Our Honeymoon

My husband and I kicked off our honeymoon by spending our first night at the Covington Inn. Our hostess was very welcoming, witty, and a great cook (We loved the coffee cake that accompanied breakfast! I think it had at least an inch of streusel on top!). Our room, the Master's Quarters, was much bigger than I expected for an old towboat, and very nicely decorated. We had access to the deck of the boat and enjoyed a bottle of wine while watching river-traffic as the sun set. The sight of the great Mississippi River and St. Paul skyline from your bed is like no other. Every bed at the Inn is a "sleep comfort" bed. It was a treat. We were surprised the next morning at breakfast when we discovered that there were three other couples on board that night. Our room was so quiet and peaceful--there was no TV, but we didn't miss it. We just enjoyed each other's company. I highly recommend this B&B!

My wife and I stayed at the Covington the night that I proposed to her a few years back and had a nice time. We have been to many B&Bs so I can understand some people's frustrations if they go into it with certain expectations. There are no hot tubs in the rooms and not much to walk around and see but I feel the uniqueness (you are on an old tugboat after all) and location make it a nice escape for those that don't want to go all the way to Duluth or Stillwater.

Because I had contacted the innkeeper in advance she let me come into the room before our arrival to put out the vases of roses and a boombox with our song on an auto-loop. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters and I thought the room was very nice and had a great view of the St. Paul skyline. I found the owner to be very friendly and the breakfsat was pretty decent considering it was prepared on an old tugboat without the luxury of a full mansion kitchen.

If you are from out of the area coming into town, the Covington is located right by downtown St. Paul so it is very close to all the restaurants and other entertainment that you might be looking for. There aren't any TVs in the rooms and the bathroom wasn't huge but again I think that it was fun to sleep one night on the Mississippi in a tugboat.
