We live practically down the street from yum!, so we've visited on numerous occasions. The menu at yum! is full of solid, family-friendly stand-bys: salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and a handful of comfort food entrees (including, of course, mac and cheese) -- the steak sandwich (tenderloin with red pepper aioli and argula on herb foccacia) is my personal favorite, and my wife loves the tarragon chicken salad with grapes, pecans, and celery.
Whatever you enjoy as your main course, be sure to visit the bakery case before you leave. yum!'s chocolate chip cookies are our family's current pick for best in the Twin Cities, and their ranger cookies, caramel pull-aparts, and cupcakes (especially the chocolate mousse-filled "dirt cupcake") are similarly wonderful packages of home-baked goodness to complete your visit. (Word to the wise, the chocolate chip cookies freeze VERY well.)
yum! is very casual, and in our dozen or more visits, young families and little ones seem to fill up at least half the dining room, especially during weekend lunch, making for a very convivial atmosphere. High chairs are plentiful, and about the only potential drawback is that tables can occasionally be tough to come by during peak hours. This seems to be an unfortunate consequence of the frequently up-and-down service -- for every employee who is friendly, helpful, and on their game, they are often matched by another person who seems to be sleepwalking. The inconsistent service is really the only blemish on an otherwise terrific atmosphere.
