My husband and I stayed at the Nichols Inn during the Fall Arts Festival. We found the staff to be friendly and the room to be very clean. The location, however, isn't the greatest. I had read other reviews complaining about the odd location and how it's hard to get there from the highway. Had I not been prepared for this, I would have ended up being very frustrated myself. The neighborhood the hotel is in seems a little odd, it almost seems that houses were torn down to accommodate this stretch of newer hotels and restaurants. The parking lot is a real goofy setup too.
While we are usually in agreement about our stay at a hotel, it almost seems that my husband and I sleep in two different hotels that night. He found the bed too firm, and thought the walls were a little thin because he heard people getting back to the hotel later in the night. I, on the other hand, found the bed comfortable and didn't hear a darn thing. Although, after our hike at Barn's Bluff, I was pretty exhausted. Barn's Bluff is a must see if you visit Red Wing. Be sure to wear comfy shoes. It's a bit of a hike, but the views are so worth it!
Overall, the hotel is a great place to stay. While the location is a bit goofy, it is not far from historical downtown and very close to the Pottery Place, a must see for antique enthusiasts. Cleanliness is always a top priority for me when staying in hotels and I found this place to be top notch. The Nichols Inn is a place we would stay at again.
