We took a long weekend for biking and sightseeing. Peterson is located ideally in the middle of the Root River State Trail. The Wenneson was bought by the owners about 17 years ago, I believe, rebuilt by the owners and operated as a B&B until about seven years ago when it was sold on a contract for deed. The deed reverted a few years ago and they have been running it ever since. The husband is a builder and did much of the renovation which thoroughly modern in quality, but very tastefully decorated without excess fru-fru. Our room was bigger than the web site photo would lead one to believe. The breakfast was a buffet of fruit, pastries, coffee, yogurt, waffles. Plenty of hot water for the shower. Very quiet, lots of stars. We had a three day weekend and the got a great discount on the Sunday. We could keep our bicycles in the garage (locked at night) so we didn't have to shlep them around. Breakfast can also be had Judy's a block away and there is a Friday night Fish Fry there. While the fried fish is good, the boiled (yes) fish dipped in butter was supprisingly good as well (good price, huge portions). 5 miles away is Rushford where the Creamery has has good food for lunch or dinner (burgers, sandwiches, pizza) and 36 flavers of good ice cream. The 2 scoop cup can feed 4 people but most people seem to finish it off themselves (I couldn't). Pick up a couple of county road maps in Houston or Lanesboro at the info centers at the ends of the trail. Go south from Peterson or Rushford on any county road (especially the gravel ones which are well kept up) and drive into and above the valleys that make up the bluff country. Easily spend a couple of hours in the fall and see quaint farms, even an old mill, and more corn and soy beans than you knew existed. You'll have the roads mostly to yourself, and if you see a big farm dog eyeballing you as you stop for a photo, don't get out of the car. Have a healthy and delightful breakfast or lunch at the Country Store in Highland on Co Rd 10 just 10 min south of Peterson. See a play in Laneboro. The Wenneson is a wonderful well situated. Don't miss it.
