“Hidden Gem near St. Olaf”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I like local restaurants with fresh food. This was listed in a travel brochure. It is in the neighborhood near St. Olaf College. An unassuming little cottage and then you walk into a intimate, elegant retreat. The menu is so interesting and varied that it was difficult to choose. Our food as well as all we saw around us was ample and inviting. We enjoyed the freshness of the lunch and the desserts. Make sure you get the unique bread pudding dessert. Service was perfect and food delectable.

“What a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

This location has had many proprietors, but the current owners have hit the spot. I'm on a fairly restricted diet and was delighted to have "lunch walleye" that was out of this world -- cooked perfectly and garnished with sliced almonds, served with a tasty quinoa/wild rice medley with a hint of garlic, and fresh green beans. With the exception of the butter on the beans, all with the limits of my diet and pocketbook. My friend had an "appetizer" that was a meal -- flat bread with Greek salad topping. She declared it delicious and took leftovers home for another day. Server was friendly and helpful but not doting or oppressive. We definitely need to ensure this venue makes it for the long haul.

“Excellent value, big-city quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

With one exception, the food, service, and ambience were equal to what we expect in much larger cities. We started with pot stickers and crispy (not heavy) calamari for appetizers, and we four were very pleased. Next were salads, a green salad and a pear-walnut-gorgonzola lightly dressed salad, both huge and very fresh. Our main dishes were nice small tenderloins, a perfect seared ahi tuna, and a walleye fillet with almond slices. I was worried that the sushi grade tuna might not be up to par this far from an ocean, but it couldn't have been better. However, I didn't anticipate a problem with the walleye, being so close to where it came from. The walleye was so past freshness that it was inedible. (The server took it off the bill without hesitation.)
The server was young and friendly but needs just a little more training with wine service (don't put the cork back in the bottle; roll the bottle when finishing the pour) and needs to notice when utensils are removed but not replaced.
Wine prices are way below big-city prices, with the most expensive bottle topping out at $30!
The décor is neat—an old storefront in a residential neighborhood, a tin ceiling, warm colors on the walls, white table linens, and fresh flowers on every table. Noise was moderate.
Alas, they don't have espresso to finish the meal.

“Warm hospitality and great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Enjoy this charming, warm restaurant, with free parking, and great food. I have gone with my husband and with friends, and it is good for either. It is a great spot for lunch or dinner. Be prepared that it can be noisy, so you may need to sit close to each other. I have especially enjoyed the nicoise salad and the salmon entree.

“The Ole Store Restaurant has all the components for a lovely dining experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

During a recent trip to Northfield, I had the pleasure of dining at the Ole Store three times over the space of five days; twice for dinner and once for Sunday brunch. Each experience was a symphony of excellence. Wonderful food that was freshly prepared, including specials of the day. A nice wine list to compliment the menu and food choices. Service that was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and flexible to the needs of a large group. A lovely ambiance that really helped set the mood for dining. I am a foodie, and if I lived within walking distance of the Ole Store, I would probably eat there every day. As it is, I look forward to my next visit!
