This was my first bed and breakfast stay in the U.S. My family stayed in quite a few in Europe last summer. I decided to give it a try, especially as the choice of hotels/motels in town was slim, and I really do not enjoy chain hotels unless they are in the three or four star range, but even then, bed and breakfast lodging is usually much nicer.
The Magic Door is located near downtown, and a good Indian restaurant, Chapati. The owner also has an art degree, and it shows in her tasteful interior decorating. The home is a two-story older house with much "new" antique as well as genuine antique furniture. DVD's are available, a small refrigerator, and a cozy sitting area.
When I arrived, there was a cheese and fruit plate made up for me and wine available. There was also a lovely decanter of sherry in the bedroom.
The jacuzzi bathtub was very nice, and the pillowtop bed very comfortable. I had a restful, quiet sleep. Next morning, my special diet requests were accommodated and I had a nice breakfast with the owner.
I will definitely stay here again. There are good restaurants and unique shops in Northfield, which has two private colleges nearby. It would be a nice option for anyone going to the Twin Cities but not wanting to stay in the hectic atmosphere of the big city.
