“A generous, and very pricey, 3...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

The good news for the Grand View Lodge is they are the best of the Gull Lake options. That said, the competition isn't much and really the GVL seems happy to be "the tallest jockey"(sorry to any jockey's reading this). I recently rented a 3br cabin for my wife and three kids. We spent 4 days and 4 nights over the July 4th week. Before I list the areas of complaint/in need of improvement, there are some good things. The beach is the best of the locations on Gull, the pool is tiny but nice, and there are some employees there who understand service. Mariam at the Italian Restaurant should move to a city and run a restaurant, outstanding! and Jason at the front desk put forth a valiant effort to make our stay good (he got us a dinner reservation after I brought most of this to his attention) and Cosmin on breakfast duty was the only one in the lodge for breakfast who knows what service is!.

BUT, here is what you need to know before you go: the cabins are old (the dirt on the edges of the bed frames was deep and plentiful), they have three shuffleboard areas and only broken discs so you can't play (take some of my $900 a night and drive to target for a new set...an easy fix but indicative of the lack of effort put forth throughout the hotel), bocce didnt have the balls either, the pool towels are barely more than hand towels (think two star hotel here), we were awoken day 1 by the lawn mowers at 8:15 am outside our room and day 2 (after a late July 4th night) by the leaf blowers also shortly after 8am. Our family of 5 sat at a table for 4 with a table jammed on for breakfast and could only hope to get some coffee (I like others guests lined up at the kitchen door in hopes of garnering the privilege of finding some coffee...the last day I was brought a luke warm pot from a table that had left...think two star effort but at least there WAS an effort!!). And as of 5pm one day our cabin had not been made up when we were trying to make a 5:30 dinner. Jason had them there at 9am the next day with a team of 5 though!

But let me finish as remember I was there for four days: my 10 year old went on the banana float ride on the lake but the boat broke down so he bobbed around for 15 of his 30 minutes with no guidance from the girl running the boat. Luckily he didnt fall off becuase when we were tubing a boy feel off another boat but the boy driving that boat didnt see so our boat needed to go get him. I can't fathom how in this litigous time they don't have a driver and a spotter on a boat (but they do have these rides where other facilities don't).

On our final morning a very grumpy lady came out of the tennis office to badger me about playing tennis at 8am with one of my children. She said the courts were reserved for lessons. Well, when we left at 9am no one was using anyone of the four.

I could list more hopefully this will be helpful to you. And before you book, there are two things to note (and you can read my many reviews and I am generous with ratings when deserved), this is a two star plus or three star establishment where service is performed to the minimum in the employee job description and the facilities won't be what you thought you were getting if you are thinking 5 star (which at their price point some of you reading this may be)!

Your feedback is very important to us as each comment card is used to help form the basis for improving our performance, measuring guest satisfaction and rewarding employees. We appreciate all comments and always investigate any complaints to insure our team is providing the best in service.

Your comments about our housekeeping staff not getting your accommodations ready before 5pm is not something we often have issues with. Our team places the highest priority on those units with new arriving guests, but on that particular day it was very busy, so our team worked as fast as they could with the highest quality of housekeeping Grand View is known for.

Our grounds crew is not allowed to begin work on the lawns until 9am, however, there are several private cabins close to where your unit was located and perhaps this is what you heard earlier in the morning.

The waterfront team pulls hundreds of guests on a daily basis. After talking to the waterfront team, the findings concluded that the boat did in fact stall, but was quickly restarted and the ride continued. The rides are complimentary to resort guests and is one of our most popular activities offered. However, machinery glitches do happen on a very rare basis and safety precautions are always observed at the highest standard.

Our leadership team has worked very hard to provide a fun, safe and comfortable guest experience. Our staff works just as hard to provide our guests the utmost quality of service with the constant goal in mind – to help enhance the guest experience and provide them with a lifetime of memories during their stay at Grand View.

We greatly appreciate your business and thank you again for taking the time to share your valued feedback with us.

Stayed for just one night with the family (2 adults, 2 kids age 10) in late June in a 1BR Pines Clubhouse Suite (suite #513).

The Room:
The room was actually much better than we were expecting and better than the website pictures (how often does that happen). Main living area was very clean, with a nice big gas fireplace and leather sofa. Decor and carpet appeared fairly new and did not seem dated at all. The main living area was connected to the bedroom by a hallway with about 12-15 feet between the living room and bedroom. The bedroom had two queen beds, another tv and windows on two sides of the room. It also had a decent sized closet. Between the living room and bedroom was a large bathroom with a very good-sized jaquzzi (not just a bathtub with jets that some places call a jacuzzi) with ample room for two people. The bathroom also had tons of counter space and a shower with good hot water pressure. The unit was tucked into some trees off the main road and had an excellent view of the golf course. All-in-all we could not have been happier with our room, with the exception of the air-conditioner. Unfortunately it was still hot out overnight and we had to have the AC on all night long. It was LOUD, which would be okay if it stayed on the whole time, but it would cool down the room for 15-20 minutes, then shut off for 15-20 minutes, then turn on again. It made it impossible to sleep. In the morning I felt like I had taken about 30 15-minute naps that night. This was the only downside to our stay.

The Facilities:
We were only there for 1 night (and the following morning) so we didn't have time to enjoy all the resort had to offer, but I will say this - it was about the most perfect pool / bar / beach layout I have seen in MN. The pool is large with a nice waterslide for the kids and some basketball hoops. There are also two hot tubs. Weather permitting, one side of the pool building is completely open leading to the adjacent bar area. The bar area was nice (drinks a little pricey - $14 for a mixed drink and a beer), with a big fireplace and plenty of patio seating with a view of the lake. The beach is only 30-40 yards away, so the kids could be in either the pool or at the beach without any trouble.

Overall we loved Grand View and will definitely be back. Without the air-conditioner noise our stay would have been perfect. Next time we'll book when the night time temperature is a tad cooler ;-)

Room Tip: Pines clubhouse suite #513 was very nice, but had noisy AC

Our family trip to Grand View Lodge exceeded our expectations. It is hard to find good customer service these days but the staff here was amazing! We had kids ranging in age from 2-15 and all had a great time, there was plenty of things for eveyone to do...including the adults. We were sad to leave and are already talking about next year.

First time here. Stayed for one night after dropping kids off at camp. Pictures on web are deceiving. The staff was very, very friendly. The onsite restaurant we tried was average. Granted we were very tired from a very tough travel day (may never fly Southwest again) and the reservation for our room was tough to get. The resort sells out quickly. We got one of the last "cabins" on the lake (lovely view of lake from cabin window) which we thought had a "kitchen" but all it was was a coffee pot on top of a microwave stacked ontop of a dorm room refrigerator. For alot of money and this was a reduced rate, we walked in and the room was damp and dingy feeling and the furnishings were...shabby. The carpet was multicolored, just made everything feel unclean. We opened the dusty drapes and they fell off the tract. The engineering guys came by quickly to fix but they needed new tract. So there they hung. We were so tired all we wanted was a good nite sleep - we decided to use the sleeper sofa in the main room because we could watch a little tv, open the window to feel the breeze with the oncoming storms. (The only bedroom is up a few stairs in the back with a window ac unit; we just had 2-3 90 degree days. ) Don't make this choice - very uncomfortable. The small bathroom was clean enough. We paid alot of money and could not see how they will get double for the room during high season. Again- very nice staff, nice location for the cabin but it needs major remodeling to command the price.

Spent a weekend here for a friends bachelorette party. The cabin we stayed in was okay for how expensive it was. The only problem we ran into was our fridge stopped working and all of our food spoiled. The resort brought as much ice as we needed within minutes of calling the front desk. The service was unreal... Perfect boat driver (so fun and had to deal with a bunch of rowdy girls), shuttle drivers, front desk, ect. You MUST go to the Italian Garden Resturant! Marian run out to the front of the cute Resturant to greet you so excited! The food is amazing! And of course the rest of the resturant staff was great. Fun weekend and would recommend this resort for the outstanding service for sure!

I was there at a scientific meeting and we had a cabin near the beach. I had not asked for such a big room with jacuzzi and a kitchen. A smaller normal room would have been enough, But the log cabin was very nicely made and ideal for a family vacation of up to 4 people. The only thing is that it did not have a stove, just a microvace, typical American culture. The resort is very nice, the beach and grass clean, the breakfast excellent. One could spend a vacation there. Just the arrangement for the meeting was too expensive. We also had food at the restaurants, very good but expensive. You can see, that they are up to make maximum profit. We spent there 3 nights, the room service came just the first day,

Room Tip: Ask for the cheapest option or exactly what you need...

I've been to Grand View twice, once for a wedding and this last time for a family get together. On each occasion it was excellent. I would rather stay at Grand View than purchase a lake cabin anywhere in MN. My kids loved the waterpark, my wife loved the architecture, and I loved the food and golf.
