“Comfortable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

The front desk clerk was very friendly and made an effort to make the common area comfortable while I was doing some work on my laptop (the fire did not work but it was in May so I was not surprised/disappointed). The room was clean and comfortable; breakfast was enjoyable as typical for a Holiday Inn Express. I would stay here again if in the area.

This Holiday Inn doesn't offer any surprises, which is excatly why this is the hotel I chose to stay at when in Northern Minnesota near the tri-cities. The free breakfast offering is more than acceptable, rooms are always clean, gym is decent, and people are friendly. Sometimes the front desk can be a little understaffed, but they are apologetic if you have to wait more than just a couple of minutes.

A good hotel choice in the area.

Used priority club to arrange for some rooms. I used 30,000 points that I had in my account and then purchased 10,0000 points three times to be able to get three rooms in exchange for 60,000 points. Received my credit card statement and was charged for the points and then charged full price for the three rooms. i then spent an entire day on the phone with priority club, the hotel itself, the credit card company and still never resolved the issue. Nobody could explain why my card was charged for the rooms and nobody would take the charges off. All of the points I purchased were non-refundable. I eventually told them to close my account and donate my points to charity. Nobody in priority club or the hotel itself was willing to make things right. I would not recommend Holiday Inn to anyone and they have lost me as a customer forever. Very disappointing. I've stayed in the hotel before and really liked the people.

I decided to stay here on business and was not disappointed. The clerk that checked me in was very helpful and friendly, the hotel was clean and the free drinks and snacks were a bonus. Will stay again for sure.

My wife and I were traveling to pick up a new puppy and spent the night at the Holiday Express. Very good room and good value--fresh rooms and friendly staff.

Staff was excellent to work with as we checked in late the night of our stay. The 2 queen non smoking room was very clean and well appointed. Bed was comfortable, had no problem sleeping. Breakfast was great per the kids review! Would stay again!!

Let me start by saying that when 90% of the hotel is likely filled by hockey kids and parents (and you are not one of them), it is expecting a lot to have a quiet stay. However, the physical property and features of the hotel itself are very nice, freshly constructed or updated, with comfortable bedding and pillow options, flat-screen television in the room, free wireless internet (which we did not use), reasonably sized pool and whirlpool area (although the whirlpool was a bit lukewarm for my taste), and a spacious breakfast area for the hot, complimentary breakfast provided each morning. Perhaps because it was obviously a hockey tournament weekend, prices were high, but I have not paid that much for a Holiday Inn Express anywhere else on a non-holiday weekend.

Unfortunately, we ended up in the handicap accessible room which was located adjacent to the open breakfast area (with noise that becomes amplified as multiple voices join in), across from the hallway to the pool area, which is tile and amplifies noise, and the hallway to the pool also contains vending machines, with the elevator access practically just outside the door to our room. The door to the room does not provide good noise protection at all -- perhaps a door sweep on the bottom would help rather than a gap which lets in more noise and light? The voices from the breakfast area, pool traffic and elevator quieted down after 11 when the pool was supposed to close for the evening, but were roaring pretty good starting by 6:30 AM on a Sunday morning accompanied by the pounding of feet with kids running up and down the hall to and from the breakfast room, parents calling to kids from the breakfast area as they headed down the hall or elevaor, etc. Management might consider posting a sign by the elevator door and/or hall entrance to the pool reminding people to keep voices down as rooms are close by (or at least the handicapped accessible room on the first floor is!).

The parking lot is ample and free, with Perkins a short distance away, but no other restaurants or services within walking distance. You really need to drive into Virginia, only 5-10 minutes away, for more options, though. The Holiday Inn Express is probably the nicest hotel in the area, with the Giant's Ridge quite a distance away. So, if the Giant's Ridge Lodge was full, we'd likely consider staying here again, but only if we could get a room away from the high-traffic areas given the lack of sound protection.

Room Tip: Unless you need the accessiblity, think twice about booking if the only room available is the handic...
