“Phenomenal Hotel, even better staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Hotel reviews tend to lean towards subjective a lot of the time and I try to make a point of being as objective as possible, because in the end, opinions are exactly that, personal preferences that relate not entirely to the hotel itself but rather the individual reviewing it.

Hotel Ivy near Downtown Minneapolis is a great hotel. I am going to list what I consider to be the benefits of this hotel and what the cons are.

Benefits:
- The rooms here are very spacious, and the bathrooms are pristine. No matter what room type is chosen, the bathrooms is granite with a separate soaking tub and walk-in shower. The room's layout (At least for the Executive King) is such that when you walk in it is almost a corridor, which houses a sort of divider with minibar and coffee maker. To the right or left is the door leading to the bathroom, and then on the opposite side is the King bed which sits directly in front of a flat screen TV, which is mounted on that divider I spoke of earlier. There is also a huge window that overlooks the city of Minneapolis, with shades that darken the room very well in the morning.
- The staff is very professional and accommodating. I received a complimentary room upgrade upon check-in without even being asked.
- There is a restaurant located on the lobby level which also has a happy hour.
- There is a valet parking service, or a parking ramp literally across the street for about $10 a night (quite good for the Minneapolis area)
- There is a spa for all of you that want that true "vacation experience", if that is what you are traveling for
- Extremely quiet for sleeping, very well insulated rooms

The "cons" (although I personally do not think they make a huge difference):
- There is no pool here, so just keep that in mind when traveling and if it is important to you.
- The price is a bit high for a room, depending on when you go. I happened to get a very good rate when I went but it can be as high as the upper $300's during the week, and a bit lower during the weekend days

Overall this is my take on the Hotel Ivy - It is a great hotel for the business traveler that wants a more luxurious experience with minimal children. Having said that, this hotel would not be my first choice for anyone traveling with a family for that very reason. Although the price may seem a bit high for a lot of people, I would definitely (and subjectively) recommend this hotel for at least a one-time visit. I personally give this hotel a "5" star rating because my experience was wonderful and everything that I look for in lodging that could contribute to a 5-star rating applies to this hotel.

If you get a chance to get down (or up) to this hotel, I hope your experience is as good as mine!

Safe Travels!

Room Tip: 1. Try to request a room on an upper floor as it really adds to the view factor 2. Prepare for park...

“Nice Hotel; Uneven Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

We stayed here for a family Thanksgiving weekend trip. The rooms are very nice, and the location is good, although it feels a little bit away from the main downtown. In reality, it's just a couple of blocks from Nicollet Mall and a 10-minute walk to most stores and restaurants.

While we enjoyed our stay, the service was at times great and at times pretty bad. For the amount they're charging and the general branding of the hotel, I'd expect the service to be great or good all of the time.

A couple of the misses:

It was really hard to get a cab, and the staff struggled to get a cab even when they called for one. One staff member directed us to what I believe was the taxi queue for the nearby Hilton a couple of blocks away. I appreciated that he was able to direct us to a cab since we had a dinner reservation that we were trying to make, but it was cold and windy and my mother, who's in her 70s, was with us.

We had issues with our rooms on check-in. We had booked a Superior Suite, but apparently they had some maintenance issues on the floor that houses that room type so there were none available. They downgraded us and lowered the price by about $30/night for the new room type, but the new room was nowhere near what the Suite was supposed to be so the pricing seemed off for what we were getting. I had a very unhelpful exchange with the front desk trying to sort through it but just gave up.

Finally, a pet peeve: they charge for wi-fi access by device so you pay $14/day/device. If you have two people in a room each accessing the wi-fi on a separate device, you'll pay $28/day unless you're in a room type where internet is included. I've seen this at luxury hotels while downscale hotels will many times give you wi-fi for free for all devices, and I don't understand why luxury hotels think it's ok to do this.

So, overall, nice place to stay. The room issue was probably a one-off, but the cab and internet pricing will affect others so just be aware of it when you're making your travel plans.

“Good hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012 via mobile

We stayed in a junior suite which had a very comfortable bed, separate shower and whirlpool tub. The tub was a little short for someone taller and shower a little cramped but overall very comfortable and clean room. The restaurant in the hotel seemed to have strange menu options so we decided to eat at a different location but there are plenty of food options available. The view from the room left a lot to be desired as it overlooked a parking ramp and an apt building. The cookies left at turndown were a bonus.

“Hotwire and Hotel Ivy incompetence”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

We recently got caught in a crossfire between Hotwire and the Hotel Ivy and it almost cost us a trip to see Springsteen and take in an NFL game. I received a call from Hotwire at 6 PM the night before our departure to Minneapolis that the Hotel was "closing"? I phoned Hotwire and they said that they would refund my money. After many different conversations, they always seemed to be seeking permission to refund my money rather than help with alternate reservations. I suppose they do this to release themselves from any responsibility. After receiving the bad news from Hotwire, I phoned the hotel directly and was told "No problem, we are relocating ALL of our guests to the W". The representative said that it included me and that the location of the W was equally close to the stadium. At that point Hotwire called me back and I had to excuse myself from the Ivy to take the call. Hotwire said they would find alternate reservations. I was also told if the replacement reservations were more money, I could apply to Hotwire for a refund of the difference. This seemed somewhat reasonable, although I know from previous experience with Expedia that they would upgrade you for a cancelled reservation and absorb the cost difference themselves.
I advised Hotline that the Hotel Ivy had said they would accomodate me at an alternate hotel, and since Hotline could not guarantee a room at that point, I would deal with the Ivy directly. I called the Ivy and asked to confirm my new reservation at the W through them. The person I spoke to said that the previous representative had "made a mistake". The dot.com customers would not be transferred; only the guests who had booked with the Hotel directly. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was told by him that the minute I book with a dotcom reservation company, I am their customer, not the Hotel Ivy's. I pointed out to him that I have a reservation confirmation code from the Hotel, but he said that they only recognize me as a Hotwire customer, and not one of theirs. i pointed out to him that I am a Starwood SPG member, and he said that made little difference since effective Dec 16, 2012 the Hotel Ivy would no longer be part of the Starwood organization. At that point, I am sure that greed was the only motivation for cancelling my reservation. The Hotel Ivy has poorly represented the City of Minneapolis on a weekend in which the Mayor Chris Coleman has officially declared Nov 9 to 12 as "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Weekend in St Paul". I am sure that their mission was to cut out the bookings from Hotwire and re-sell the rooms for more money. What a pathetic business case for a hotel.
As for Hotwire, I ended up speaking to several of their reps, and apparently some of those consulted a supervisor. I was firm but polite in my request that I did not want a refund. I told them that I wanted accomodations since I was sitting on a $1000 worth of event tickets. They retracted their earlier offer to allow me to apply for a refund if they charged me additional funds to move my reservation. Eventually, with nowhere to turn, I booked my reservation directly at the Radisson. They were professional to deal with. I put my tail between my legs and accepted the refund of my money from Hotwire; money which they had held since Sept 13, 2012.
Moral of the story is book directly with the hotel. If you want to save money through a dotcom, book with Expedia, and don't trust Hotwire. I also admit I was suckered by the Hotwire method of getting you to commit and then find out which Hotel you are getting.

“Fabulous Experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

I traveled to Minn from NYC for a work event that we were hosting in the City of Lakes. We treated our guests to spa services at the Ivy Spa Club and then retreated to the Grand Suite for more fun activities. The staff at the Spa and Hotel were extremely pleasant and helpful - planning a party from another state couldn't have been easier! Onsite, everyone was knowledgeable, friendly and extremely accomodating, The Spa was gorgeous & our guests raved about the services. The Grand Suite was huge - bigger than my entire NYC apartment! It was clean and quiet (no outside noises krept in). Since I was also staying at the hotel, I had the chance to check out the Gym. It was packed with equipment, machines, music & tvs - I couldn't ask for anything better. Overall, it was a fabulous experience. From the amazing staff to the beatiful space, I'd definitely go back again for work or pleasure.
