I last stayed at this hotel 4 years ago when it was a Radisson. It was good enough then but thought it overpriced considering the facilities there are limited, for example, there is no pool. In its latest incarnation, this hotel has improved its look 100%. The entrance is extremely welcoming as are the staff, the catering is limited and we ended up eating next door at Appleby's on our first evening. Do try the cheese and bacon biscuits in the bar; For anyone from the UK, they are really cheese and bacon scones, and they are very nice as are the staff in there!
Beds: comfortable and on the firm side, bathroom: excellent with a walk in shower, we did not try room service on this trip but the wi fi is free, which makes a nice change, although for some reason you only get 15 minutes in the business centre.
I did not use room service. Coming from the UK I object to paying for delivery of a meal, with an additional 21% tip on top, some of which goes to 'administration'. I have never understood why Americans are so generous with their tips, I pay for good service not just any service!
One gripe in an otherwise unblemished stay: one of the towels was badly stained! It had clearly been laundered, but there was a dirty black mark on it as though someone had used it to mop the floor and there is no way the housekeeper could have missed it when she hung it in the shower. Not wanting to get her in trouble, I left it on the ironing board with a note, but returned yesterday evening to find it still there. That is just not on and I reported it to the front desk on checking out this morning.
Finally this hotel is some way from the airport, although they send you details about how to pick up the shuttle downtown if you ask. We never used it because my cousin picked me up at the airport. From next year there will be a train stop right outside the door, which will be perfect!
Once you are there you are within a few seconds walk of the university campus and there is a free shuttle bus to anywhere within 5 miles, which includes the Amtrak station. There are plenty of shops nearby and a Starbucks right next door if you are jet lagged and need an early morning coffee.
Finally, the cost of a room is more than it should be. I made the same comment 4 years ago and nothing has changed. There is no pool, although there is a gym, and there is a great conference facility there. All in all, it is a cool place to stay and I can recommend it despite my 'towel crisis' this week as everything else was spotless, the staff we met were very helpful, especially the guy who came to show us how to use the TV. He then went on and helped us with a few other things and he deserves 5 stars for his kindness!
