“Mediocre meats make a mediocre buffet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2011

I can't really judge Holy Land as a grocery store. I've never shopped there for ingredients. I walked through and it seems ideal for hard-to-find Middle Eastern ingredients. This review solely concerns the restaurant, specifically the buffet. I went with some friends at a relatively busy time, which means the buffet should have the highest turnover for fresh food. Unfortunately, the food was rather average. The lamb, supposedly le premier choix of any respectable Middle Eastern restaurant, was rather bland, uninteresting, and dry. Even after I added generous amounts of cucumber sauce and fried vegetables—nothing awe-inspiring. The other meats (i.e. the chicken, the meatballs) were equally unsatisfying. Sure, it's relatively affordable food, and you won't leave hungry, but there are plenty of restaurants that serve heaps of food at the same price and also find a way to make tasteful entrees. On top of this, the restaurant interior is bleak and reminiscent of a hospital cafeteria: no charming Middle Eastern decor, like The Black Sea near Hamline University, and certainly no overly jovial and friendly owners coming out to greet every patron. It's not a negative experience, but given the praise Holy Land receives through the grapevine, it's certainly not an establishment that fills a desired niche. I believe many overly enthusiastic reviewers simply don't know real Middle Eastern food. Holy Land is just boring and passionless. There’s a stall at the Maplewood Mall that serves gyros with better lamb meat—and that’s just a cheap food court operation.
