“Good location and value for a big city hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2011

As you would expect from a Marriott property, this hotel is clean, modern, and comfortable. When searching for accomodations in downtown Minneapolis I noticed that rates varied greatly for the same hotels depending upon dates possiblity due to conventions or other large gatherings. Because this TownePlace Suites is on the fringe of downtown, and evidently is mostly patronized by tourists vs. business travelors, I suspect the rates are more stable. We paid $101 per night plus the $13 parking. As another reviewer mentioned, you can park free on the street from 6:pm Friday until Monday morning. However you need to get a space early so what you should do is move your car from the hotel lot about 4pm and put money in the meter ($1 or so) to get you past 6. If you wait until 6 there may not be any spaces as the area has many apartment houses. In my experience, Marriot's never give you a free breakfast. This one must have received complaints because they had cereal and milk for the children but little else.

A number of eating places are near the hotel but they are not on the hotel street. You need to go out the back door of the hotel through the alley and a passageway to Washington Ave. There you will find several restaurants including a very good, a busy, pizzeria. The hotel is about 1/2 mile from the baseball stadium and several restaurants on the way. As you would expect from a yuppie area near a sports arena, several of the eating places have a dozen or so TV's all on different channels and loud, blaring noise which I suppose passes for pop music these days. There are also a number of strip joints and girlie shows in the area so maybe this is the city's red light district although I can't be sure as I am not familiar with this part of the Country.

You can walk to downtown with access to the extensive skywalk system in 15 or 20 minutes. You can also board the light rail at the baseball stadium and take it to the other end of the line which is in one of the Mall of America's parking lots. Incidentally I detest suburban shopping malls but this one seemed rather pleasant maybe because I did not have to drive to it. However in reality it is just a bigger version of your standard America suburban shopping mall with all of the familiar stores plus an amusement park for children. I guess I was expecting something unique based on all of the hype I have heard about over the years.

This hotel is in an area with a lot of lofts and apartments. There is free on the street parking from 6 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Monday. Otherwise there are two lots with fees owned by the hotel. The staff was very friendly and gave me choices for where the room would be that I would occupy. There is a little market downstairs by check-in with a large map showing area restaurants and other places. I used this map to decide where I would walk for supper. There is a gate at the back of the property that allows you to walk over to the street behind the property. The room I was given was very clean and spacious. And best of all, quiet. The room has a nice equipped kitchen. Lots of outlets to recharge phone and laptop, etc. The only thing I would have liked to have had that I did not was a safe. There is a small convenience store within walking distance. A Dunn's coffee is an easy walk, as is Moose and Sadie's bakery. I had dinner at the Black Sheep cafe behind the hotel through the gate--and it was great. This is a super location with a super staff in a quiet neighborhood. There are a number of clubs and bars nearby but there are also families out walking and joggers--as a solo traveler I felt very comfortable.

I will say that I was a bit concerned about this hotel prior to arrival, due to some of the reviews on this site. Upon arrival, however, I was pleased that we had chosen this hotel as our home base during our trip to Minneapolis. It is located in a clean semi-residential neighborhood, and we were able to walk not only to Target Field and it's Light Rail station (about 4 blocks away) but were also able to walk to the river trail (about 3 blocks). We stayed on the 4th floor, which seemed to have been recently updated with new carpet and a flat-screen tv. I have no complaints about this hotel, as the staff was friendly, and the rooms were crisp and clean. One thing to note is that the lobby is very small, so therefore there isn't much room for a breakfast area, nor many breakfast food options. Overall, however, we were extremely pleased with our choice. Also--as we arrived on Friday after 5 pm and left before Monday at 8 am, we were able to park free on the street in front of the hotel, thus saving the $13 fee the hotel charges for underground parking.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor--4th floor seemed recently updated!

We came back two days at 4 pm, and the room had not been cleaned, pretty inconvenient. The front desk didn't know what to do about it either.

Within walking distance to the Twins new ball park, Target Field. My friends and I rented a two room suite with sofa sleeper plus kitchenette. The outdoor pool was great for the hot MN summer weather we were blessed with! We saved tons of money by making meals in our room. We were also within walking distance of the Mpls. River Walk and took in the Stone Arch Bridge and Mill City Ruins. On Thursday we walked to the Farmer's Market on Nicollet Avenue. Lots to do within walking distance, and with just a short drive, we were on Grand Avenue in St. Paul for some shopping. Great time had by all!

This hotel is way overpriced. The daily parking fee is around $15. The property is a good 2-3 miles from the warehouse district. I believe it was a $20 cab ride to take us from the hotel to the Target Center. The rooms are nothing special, and feature a 20inch tube TV. I would never stay here again for the price that they charge.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We wish all of our guests a positive experience when staying with us and apologize that your stay was not what you had expected.

I wanted to address a few of your concerns, the first being the parking. Our parking at the TownePlace Suites is $13.00 per night with in and out access, if you were charged $15.00, please let us know as we will be happy to make the correction to your account.

Our hotel is located in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis, we are a part of this wonderful neighborhood and hope you were able to enjoy all the elements of what it has to offer.

Lastly, we are happy to announce that as of June 29th, our hotel has been completely updated with 32" flat screen televisions. We know that this upgrade will help boost our guest experience.

If you decide to travel to the Twin Cities again, please don't hesitate to call us directly as we would be happy to help you book another reservation.

Again, thank you very much for your time in reviewing our hotel. Our guests are what make this hotel a success.

Warm Regards,
The TownePlace Suites Management Staff

We stayed here for 8 weeks while based at the U of M. The location is very good. Minneapolis has an excellent public transport system, so we could get to campus in about 30 mins. Or, we could walk there, over the lovely Stone Arch Bridge. It is also easy to walk to downtown or to, say, the Guthrie Theatre. The terminus of the light rail system is 5 mins walk away - so getting to The Mall of America, and the airport is easy.
There are lots of nice restaurants in the area. Of these, Toast (pizza/wine bar) and Moose and Sadies (best brunch and coffee) are highly recommended. JD Hoyts is also good.

We stayed in a 2 room suite. It was quiet. Had good internet access - wired and wireless. You can pay more for very high speed network, but we didn't find it necessary.

The kitchen was OK, and we did some cooking there.

The hotel is very near the Mississippi - nice place to go running. Once it gets too cold for that, there is a small gym in the hotel.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

If we were visiting Minneapolis again, we would stay there,
