“Overall good experience but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We visited this hotel over New Year's & overall we were very pleased. The room was spacious, clean & well-appointed - especially the bathroom. We appreciated that there was plenty of hot water but did not enjoy that it was very difficult to control. Once we realized that putting the cold water all the way on & barely turning the hot water on at all was what we needed to do, we stopped scalding ourselves. The BIG problem was the valet parking & lack of helpful doorman service. We arrived with 2 large bags - & were quite surprised when we drove up that there was not a doorman there to help us. We've stayed at a number of Kimpton properties & have always been impressed with the quick & courteous way they have always immediately assisted us upon arrival. It was VERY cold & after we struggled with the wind & giant heavy entry doors we discovered that you must climb 6 or 7 stairs & we did so with our bags with zero assistance. We also wondered where the valet was as we were forced to leave our car out front in a bus lane. We soon learned that the valet is half a block away around the corner! When we asked if the valet comes & gets our keys & parks our car we were told: "Nope. He's down the block around the corner. You can either take your car to him or you're welcome to find a garage & self park - there's plenty around." I implored: "Really? There's no way for you to get him our keys so we don't have to go back out in the cold?" A young man was helping us but at this point a woman who was leaning on the desk behind him smirked & informed us that would NOT be possible & helpfully (yes, sarcasm intended) suggested we hurry & move our car from out front as ticketing out there is common. I might add that, while all of the valets were pleasant guys - trying their best, we were unable to contact them EVER to bring up our car & apparently the front desk was unable to get them the message to do so, despite our requests, so EVERY time we went to get our car, it was never there so we were forced to wait outside in the cold, windy, sub-zero weather for 15 to 20 minutes to get our car. One valet took pity on us & let us go back in the hotel to wait & actually brought the car to the front of the hotel. (Imagine that!) He did tell us that he really wasn't supposed to but he felt bad that we were having such a bad time. Now, all this being said - it really IS a lovely hotel. Maybe we would consider returning in the nicer weather but we will definitely not consider it as a colld weather option again.

Dear PixieVivi: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are actually in the process of working with the city and our neighbors to create a valet zone in front of the hotel. This would make for an easier arrival experience. We do not have our own parking garage and therefore have to rent spots from other area garages, which sometimes means a slightly longer than usual wait for your vehicle. This is why our valet claim tickets boldly note that we will need thirty minutes notice. I assure you that the absence of a bellman is not typical. I'm glad that you enjoyed other aspects of the hotel and I certainly hope you will return.

We were generally happy with our stay. The hotel is smaller and older than many so there were problems with the heating and steady water temperature. Parking is an awkward arrangement of around the corner valet parking just ahead of a bus stop. Bar area was small and badly decorated. On the flip side, the courtesy given to our requests was really exceptional and the front desk gave us their complete attention. My husband thought the fitness area was exceptional as well. I think we might go back if we could overcome the cost of parking.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room. Ask for the kind of pillows you require for a good night's sleep.

Dear MBB66066: Thank you for staying with us and sharing your feedback. We are working with the city to create a valet zone in front of the hotel. Nothing is final, but it looks promising. The $30 for overnight parking is right in line with, if not less expensive than all of the other downtown Minneapolis hotels. This is an expensive city to park in. I do hope you will visit us again. We'd love to have you!

I'm very upset with our stay. I was told we could check-in at 3:00, we arrived at 3:15 & had to wait till almost 5:00 to get our room. They said we could have $50 towards breakfast for the inconvenience, they even left a message on our room phone, but failed to tell us it was for inroom service only. We ate at the restraunt, which is a bigger joke, we had to wait 2 hrs for our food there. When we went to check out we were charged for a breakfast that SUCKED!! Stay at the Hyatt or even the Comfort Inn, you won't get jacked around like we did.

Dear tlf1975: Appreciate your comments and thoughts on the challenges of arriving on a busy Saturday at the hotel. The restaurant in the property isn’t actually operated by the hotel which is why we cant offer you a credit in the establishment, of course we have made the adjustment to your account and hope that the rest of your stay was a little more positive than a stay at a Hyatt or Comfort Inn.

We stayed at The Grand Hotel over the Christmas holiday while visiting family in the Twin Cities. Despite the lower occupancy during the holiday, the staff remained committed to excellent service for their guests. Having a daily happy hour in the lobby, guests coming and going with their four-legged friends and locals coming to the hotel to use the amazing fitness center all kept the hotel from feeling deserted and creepy. I have to say that what we loved most about our stay was the wonderful bed. I travel regularly for business, and this was by far the best mattress I've ever slept on.

We were really looking forward to staying at the Grand, due to mostly good reviews. We arrived at 2:45, check in time was supposed to be 3:00, they finally told us we could go to our room at 4:45. We had dinner reservations for 5:15 at a nice restaurant, so it was a sure rush for the 4 women, who after hours of driving needed to change and clean up a little. The lobby was full of people waiting to get into their rooms, it was a pathetic situation. As far as the room, we were pleased, everything about it was great. Though, the nightmare continued in the morning when we went for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. We were the first customers when it opened and from the time we order our food, it took over 30 minutes to recieve it. He never came back to fill our coffee or check on our food. After another hour I had to chase him down to bring our check, I have never been in such a situation. There was only 1 person working, and other couples in our group spent 2 hours from the time they got to the restaurant until they got thier checks. I felt like I was staying at a hotel that just opened and was only expecting 10 people to stay at it. I will definitely never stay at this place again.

Thanks so much for the note. Wow, that is a very long time to wait for your guest room. I assure you that everything we could do to get you into your room as quickly as possible was being done as it always is on a busy Saturday. The challenge tends to be guests staying late, guest coming in early and having specific room requests and the logistics of moving guests through the hotel. Appreciate you sharing the experience, we are working on it!

We were very pleased with the hotel. Nice King Premier room, but Atrium is not what I expected. Just means an inside room. Staff were great and very helpful.
Hotel is close to everything, including LRT to Mall of America.

Room was spacious and clean. I like the Green Program option of getting a $5 coupon if you don't need your room cleaned the next day.

The complimentary wine and appetizer hour each day is very nice.

Only negative is that the heating fan is very loud.

Would definitely recommend.

Tip - sign up for the In Touch loyalty program before you go as it is free and allows free WiFi, vs. $12/day.

So we flew in from NY and got to the grand at 11am. Our room want ready which was fine since check on is 3:00. The problem is...it is now 4:30pm and we were told we would have an at LEAST 1 hour wait b/c rooms weren't ready. We were not offered compensation at all and were basically dismissed. Have not seen rooms or anything else yet but have a bad taste in our mouths about this hotel. NOT a good welcome to Minnesota. Not happy at ALL.

It is always our goal to have guests checked into their rooms at the moment they arrive and if you arrive at 9 am and the room is ready, its yours. Our challenge always stems from trying to have guests out of the hotel, have the room turned and ready for you, with your specific room type we tried our very best to contact the guests and have them vacate as early as possible. Hoping that the rest of your journey to our beautiful hotel and great city was a little more positive than the wait for your guest room.
